Who do you trust, and why?

I recognize that and appreciate the discussion. My opinion or answer to your questions-

Yes, on a whole the entire (green) landscape/tree industry is incredibly wasteful and frivolous. (In my opinion)

I own a small business with my brother, there are no employees. We mostly do pruning work and small removals. Some planting and RCX, install mulch beds, grind small stumps. Yes, we burn fossil fuels but as little as possible. We do not own a chipper instead opt to bring brush to branch and limb diversion in our (relatively) small truck with v8. We use small chainsaws and also the husky battery saw and blower. Our service area is small, I would like to go to the jobs on a bike but folks want the brush hauled away. The purpose of the work is to make the client happy without causing harm to trees or environment, and getting the cheque. :) My enjoyment of the work comes and goes, but really I not feel like I am doing any great or noble deed in my daily toils.

I hope that answers your questions, I am happy to elaborate on anything. You know I love to talk about myself.
My guess is most of those clients are hiring you because they think you are adding value to their property... I don't have a problem with that.

You don't need to do great and noble deeds to make people happy. But if you are making people happy, you are doing great and noble deeds! I hope you find more and more joy in knowing you do a good job of making one little slice of their life just a little happier!:)

only to pay bills. outside of that I can hardly think of a good justification for my work.

Think a little harder, Kevin. I know that I have removed thousands of trees and limbs that if left would have caused great harm. I have made adjustments to an equal amount of trees that have ensured their continued well-being. What we do is not just fluff, at least it shouldn't be. It is up to each one of us to ensure that it's not.

Whoever mentioned dose had it right. One plastic bag in the ocean is a non-issue. Drop a few hundred billion in and you have a shit storm. It is the same with everything we do. We are many. What each one of us does, makes a difference. If we can not change how we go through life, cannot change the things that we do that we know are wrong, why should we expect it from others?

Levi, you asked who should we trust? I say trust yourself. If something doesn't sound right, question it. There is no lack of information if you are willing to dig for it.

Whereas I wish you despair and indigestion Levi.
The bigger story for everybody else:
Withing the last year I went from full time public employment and part time private to just full time private.

@JD3000 went from full time private to full time public.

See how that all fits? :loco:

Acephate is the reason I pity the fool! I have some Lepitect that I tried on Spider mites (I liked the idea of not hosing down a giant tree, but I'm not so convinced it is a viable alternative...also, I suspect Gypsy moth is going to pop up one of these days and I'll be ready....but I digress). There is a partially used package that has been sealed in 3 ziploc bags, a tupperware container AND a watertight ammo box. I still get some of the stink when I open the cabinet door.

If I recall corectly....generic acephate 97 may have special needs labeling for soil injection so you may be able to pay less than brand name Lepitect. Nasty stuff. Agreed on mite control, takes 2 years but will at least supress a population.

If someone comes up with a reliable root soak product that controls mites and/or lepidoptera, they'll make a killing. Acelepryn works for cats but $$$$$$$$.

Acelepryn is a good introduction into this larger discussion. Interesting notes on the label. No signal word required (because acute toxicity is so low). However, the label also says "Intended for use by commercial applicators only". If the toxicity is so low, why the implied restriction to commercial applicators only? There are products with "Warning" (and I think a few with "Danger") that anybody can buy at Walmart or Lowe's....but not Acelepryn. Go figure.

Yeah it's an interesting one. EPA made them give some warnings and ld50 and whatnot but seems to be a step in a cool direction. Even better will be standardized endophytes to fight bugs and crud from within. Similiar to vaccinations if you will. Certainly an area with, hopefully, great promise. Using biology to combat biology.
