What would you do?/ trees at my new(old) house

Did you yank the tree around abit? The basswood that is. Ive seen and worked on some pretty hollow basswoods. The wood is lite and it seems to be weighted away from your house, yes? I didnt see any gap at the base where it met the ground. Im not sure how to interpret that bit of girdle on the right side. concrete doesnt look to bad for a tree that size. Meaning to me that its not heaving in any particular direction. Just getting bossy with the space. Nice shack bro!

a shot from the back fence toward the house. You can see my 8 year old daughter climbing up the spruce if you look close. In the back yard, I have 2 40 ft. hemlocks, the 100 ft. pine, a 70 ft. norway spruce, a BIG saucer magnolia, and a 85 foot pecan.

Howed that kid get up there? Shinney? I don't think I could do that.

and what can be said of Tim

of climbing skill

When in doubt, find the flare.

The answer, very often, is there.

Remove the concrete from that poor tree's feet

What you see may, or may not not give you a scare.

Post an image, the news to share.

I can't rhyme as nice as AB but I'm tryin'.

Noel, my first impression is removal, but after some thought, I realized that I cannot remember the last time I dealt with a storm damaged Linden (cordata or americana). Light, flexible wood, and a seemingly good design, allowing failure of twigs and smaller limbs first make this a hard decision.

I say remove as much cement as possible and do a pull test.

Norm, first things first. I would encourage you to start with the concrete!! It’s here you will get the most important answers to your question. Natural progression from the ground up!!!

I have reached my decision to keep the tree for the rest of this year and monitor. I will probably borrow Missouri State University's resistograph and check the tree out sometime soon. I am not going to tear up my patio, since I know the tree is in decline, I'll just enjoy it for what it is worth for now. I am planning on taking off at least 2 of the large lower limbs that are over my bedroom. I know it sounds silly, but if the tree takes a dump going away from the house with those limbs on there, it's still going to take out the roof. This way if the tree does fail away from the house, it will miss the house. I have really enjoyed this post, and I know it is hard to make a call based on a picture, but I do appreciate all the ideas and thoughts.

What does the tip growth look like? Is it growing steady or is it in decline?

[/ QUOTE ]

It was pretty full of sprouts last year, due to the ice breakage. there are a few limbs that never did sprout that I need to take out. I'll take some shots here in a month or so and revisit this post so you all can see it with leaves.

[/ QUOTE ]Decline, as in an irreversible spiral? Hooey. That statements sounds like your mind is already in removal mode; just delayed, or is this case gradual, if major limbs are getting whacked in a what-if scenario.

No one's suggesting tearing up the whole patio; <1' radius will tell you about the flare. What the heck; if it is "in decline" and on the way out

, you'll lose more than that much concrete to the stump grinding operation before long anyway, right?.
