That's a Honey Locust!!! Which is....not an acacia!

What you are looking at is the tree in it's natural form. Knowing those spears would not be desired in the urban landscape, someone figgered out how to grow the tree without the spikes. Most of the Honey Locusts we see nowadays are thorn free. It is rare to see the thorned ones any more. Whenever I do see them, they are big- since it's been a while since people have planted the thorny version.

The thorn free version is my FAVORITE tree to climb and work in. The wood is strong- you can tie in to small TIPs. Also, the bark flakes are very strongly attached- they don't flake off easily. Knowing this, you can use them as foot holds to climb up steeply angles limbs.

It's a fun tree!

They are also big because very few people will get close enough to do them any damage!!!

Shame some other species have yet to evolve the same survival technique

Ouch "old thorny Locust" Those things are nasty to climb! I still run into one once in a while on old estates. They are definately longer lived than the "wimpy cultivars."

Nasty indeed...but here in Arizona we deal with vicious thorny trees daily. Argentine mesquite, texas ebony, sweet acacia, paloverde, ironwood ,palm (Am i forgetting any Rocks and Trees?).

I have come to the conclusion that what doesnt kill you....
makes u stronger?
no...just almost kills u

The good news is that thorns are a great detterant for hacks.
Except for the ones with those damned pole saws!

If you plant the seeds from a hybrid you get the thorny version again. Way cool. feels great when you break a thorn off in your palm.

the thorns have a "poison" on them that causes a burning and numbness in the area surrounding the puncture.... these are also called cow killers... the cows will break a thorn off in their hoof and it will get infected to the point that it kills them...

My first time climbing one of the thorny ones, I had a thorn break off in the tail of my rope, and it slid right up into my hand when I was descending.

Not cool.

Can't tell you how many times thats happened to me. Thorns are one thing (at least you can see them and get them out) cactus needles are the worst. You have to pay attention what is below the tree your climbing here. Some needles are so small they're impossible to get out of a rope.

definately not cool.

Yeah, you are definately right about paloverde, parkinsonia, even some citrus, etc. One of the nastiest jobs in our industry has got to be climbing up an old date palm with 10-20 feet of dead skirt! Makes a "thorny locust" look fun!
