what is the best hitch cord in your opinion?

The unicender!

Really depends on the hitch for me. I usually stick with beeline, but I've gone back to tenex in the last few months. Man, I missed that stuff! Too bad it doesn't last that long.
I've gotta try Ocean.

Call me an idiot but I love Tenex. It's dirt cheap, stupidly easy to splice and grips like a big dog. Most reliable material I've ever used with a VT or XT, it sets every time with having to look at or hand set it. Even OP needs a look sometimes. I've used'em all and spliced the ones that can be spliced and while OP is truly great stuff, i like Tenex a LOT better for my hitch. I hate having to think about my hitch setting, I just want it to happen... and only Tenex does that for me.

It definitely doesn't last forever but it's obvious when it needs replacing (no jacket) and a hitch cord costs me a few bucks and 15 minutes to splice. It doesn't have the temp rating of tech fiber but who do you know that's actually burned through a Tenex hitch to failure? I've burned out of a tree to see what it would do in an emergency and all i got was a flattened, glazed side that faced the rope.

I usually use Velocity or PI.

3/8" and crossover the tapers to make it double thickness. I've used both single carrier and TEC. TEC picks more and is slightly annoying to make good splices because it's easy to slip a fid between ends... but it also grabs a little better. Six one way, a half dozen the other.

If you can splice with locked brummels it's totally worth it to try some (be precise and make clean crossovers). Buying it pre-spliced takes all the fun out because it gets expensive. I go through 2 hitch cords a month sometimes.

If you're rough on hitches or worry about the low melting point, put on a FL prusik backup and burn one out like you just ran into a mess of bees. I haven't had one melt yet, just glaze. The glazing can be bad enough that several strands are trashed and you want to retire it.

Some people probably slide out of a tree faster than I do plus, I used an eight to come down from height rather than riding my hitch.

I just ordered poison hivy, beeline 8mm, tenex 10mm, hitch climber pulley.

I dont like the grizzly splice and sherrill only hand splices those 2. Haven't learned to do it myself.

i pruned 5 big sugar maples this week and my beeline needed tended almost every time I ascended, annoying. I hope the tenex grabs a lot better, I don't mind replacing.

also i'm hoping the hitch climber pulley eliminates the pulley from getting stuck between the split tail ends, also needed constant tending. I need to get some rubber peices to keep the eyes from spreading out.

have you guys found any particular carabiner that works best when using the hitch climber?

The ovals are probably better but i don't like the action on the Petzl, haven't tried CTI's.

I use a home made leather keeper similar to what's in the Sherrill catalog with Petzl Am'D ball locks.

Macrocarpa, If you use the hitchclimber, you need a spliced eye on your lifeline or you have to tie-in so that the knot doesn't bump your hitch... it's not pleasant to learn that one in a tree so I figured I'd mention it.

Good luck with the Tenex... but if you die, I'll disavow all knowledge of this conversation.
