West Coast Arborists

Flex, it seems like you have the tools and skills to get the trees done. A business license, insurance and some networking is enough to get jobs on the schedule. You've got the treework bug and a willingness to learn and that's great! Keep us updated

"every other company I know have plenty of work that they won't have to spend a lot of time training a person to do."

I'm not sure this is accurate.

Why do you want to work for yourself? Running a business is a constant headache, at which most people do not excel.

Your gear and training sound like you're oriented to removals. Your call, but some arborists find preservation work to be a more profitable niche.

Bix,
Most important I believe would be a contractors license. Already carry 1mil General liability for tree work.
Guy,
It took me a while to find that quote, it was Merle's from March 20.
Not really sure I do want my own business. Owned my own boat for a salmon season and realize the magnitude of time/money required to be the owner is very stressful.
I am set up for removals but don't feel like I'm limited to them by my set up. As I progress I see the value in preservation work and hope to expand my skills in that area as I continue

Guy your name came up this weekend at the SRT class in Sacramento, CA. Eric Whipple said he has been two some of your high quality presentations. Do you have anything up on the web or DVD format to learn from?

Flex, a SCL is important as you mentioned but not always NECESSARY if your looking to cut trees... Just gotta stay under 5 bills a day and work solo.

I don't think there is any special formula or technique to discover, although you can learn a lot from others and I see where your coming from.

I'm training someone currently and I feel like 'training' is an overstatement. My idea of teaching or training someone is to set them up with the gear, tell them how I would do it and leave the rest up to them.

For me, training is an investment of time and money. He's 26; no kids, clean, smart, great attitude, and most importantly is a fantastic human being... HARD TO FIND. He seems to be a natural, with a real hunger to learn... So we'll see how it goes.
