Wanted! 6\" chipper...

Hi there,

I'm in the market for a GOOD 6" chipper (possibly Morbark, Bandit etc). I could purchase a 2007 6" Vermeer with 300 hours for $5000.00 right now, but I've heard that they aren't the greatest particularly with the 6"X6" opening...however, I'm not ruling them out completely. But, i thought i would give the forum a try first before i seriously consider this machine...So if anyone has a used chipper out there for sale or wishes to "up grade" then please send me an e-mail. And anything up to 9" might be okay too, it just can't be too heavy because I need to be able to move it around with a half ton truck regularly.

Thanks,
Ken

P.S. I live in Owen Sound, Ontario and am willing to travel for pickup within a reasonable distance...say about 500kms and I'd like to find something around the $5000.00 price range (less or more) and for the right machine I would go a few thousand more...

Re: Wanted! 6\" chipper...

Ken,

I have a 2004 Mitts and Merrill chipper for sale. It is a drum chipper with an 84 hp cummins diesel. The machine has around 1150 hours. I used this chipper for about 3 years before a I bought a new Terex woodsman chipper. I can send you a few pictures if you are interested. Also, I am located in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Re: Wanted! 6\" chipper...

Bandit is a MUCH better choice in this size. The 6" Vermeer is a poor use of iron.

If you can find a 9" Morbark you'll be tickled! Power and light weight too.

Re: Wanted! 6\" chipper...

Just curious why a 6" ? I used one one day for a friend and if I recal it wasnt very fun.

Re: Wanted! 6\" chipper...

Can someone here pass along a few tips, to help me hunt down a good 6" -9" chipper..

Auctions? Which ones? USA? Where? Is Crossing U.S. border difficult? Kijiji?
Anything I should watch out for?

I basically could really use a push in the right direction, just some good advice as I begin the search for my first chipper.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Wanted! 6\" chipper...

Most traditional tree care companies don't use 6" chippers. I would look at craigslist, farms, landscapers, municipalities, auctions, etc. I bought a 6" Vermeer chipper and it was great. I think you're on to something, they're great for ornamental pruning. Usually the jobs with the smallest piles of brush are the most profitable anyways.

Re: Wanted! 6\" chipper...

I have a bandit 6" 25hp.
I will be honest the 25hp has worked a ton with that said I maintain my chipper very well.

How soon do you need it? Best time to buy a chipper is in the off season and you could save potentially thousands on a new or slightly used demo. That would be your best bet.
Cheers

Not mine. Owned by an alumni member from my company. It was a great machine when we were small which he bought when he went out on his own. Note the chute extension (previous thread about chute extensions relates - i made the extension in 2006 - note it doesnt look like Red Green made it) Pay the extra for this machine, and put $1500 into sand blast and paint, it will treat you well. (until you realise growth and production can only occur with a 12"+ machine)
