Violence, gun culture, what can be/should be done.

Hi folks,

I started this thread to discuss and debate the issues presented by the presence and availability of firearms with in communities and general population and to those that lack the stability and mental grounding to know right from wrong good from evil or possess the constitution to resist committing these terrible crimes.

There are 310 million non-military firearms in the US today(CNN).

Stricter gun control will not restrict criminal access to firearms. Contrarily it would restrict the rights of law abiding citizens who would be the only people prevented from obtaining the now illegal firearms.

However, unless the government comes door to door searching for them, they will never get mine.

A guitar string, a couple sticks for handles. Trick I learned in jail.

It's easy to do bad. Guns make it more efficient.

The personal defence reason? Most of the rest of the world is laughing at that joke.

In the 70's Canada got invaded by American tv. It was basically shocking. Letterman is cool. But 3 CSI's in one night?

I dont think gun control is the answer to this problem. 223 hit the nail on the head, all it will do is prevent law abiding citizens from purchasing guns. I think the answer is Family... Lets fix the american family, not have children that grow up with excuses to kill people. The common thread in all of these shootings is a broken individual. Lets start paying more attention to our family and friends. Catch these people when we can help them, dont let the depression set in. Happy people dont kill others. Lets spend time with our children, no more "I dont have time" excuses. Make time.
I know, many people come from broken homes, I too am in that crowd. But I had family and friends that cared for me and saw when I was down. AND WERE THERE for me. Do you know someone that shows signs of depression??? What have you done to help them???

I agree 100%. If the government starts helping and supporting the family unit the cycle has a better chance of repeating itself.

Society needs to be fixed

In Japan the same day hours before a guy went into a classroom and stabbed 33 children. No gun involved. They mentioned this once on NBC. Couldn't find a link.

As mentioned before guns only make it easier to do harm. Some maniac could just as easily drive a car thru a crowded mall. We need to be more vigilant as a society and as parents. There are usually signs leading up to a psychotic breakdown of an individual. Society needs to be better educated on how to spot the signs.

In the case that you just referenced 8 were killed 13 wounded, in the China school knife attack which happened Friday morning 22 children and an elderly woman were stabbed, but nobody died. If either of those two assailants had access to the kinds of firearms that were used Friday they would have been much worse.

For what it's worth the guns used on Friday were LEGALLY purchased. This is not an issue of black market guns this is an issue of what we can legally obtain. Don't get me wrong I loves me some shooting but I would gladly never pick up another gun if it meant I was contributing to a less violent society.

223tree is the 223 in reference to an ar-15?

Death by hanging, Wow! That makes sense though. Find the tallest Oak tree and hang em high for everybody to see.
I agree with many of the above and add that the Economy has a lot to do with the neglect at home. Mom works 40 Dad works 40-60 and still just enough money to skim through. Stress leads to depression and that is shown in many ways. When folks start making a decent living and can take the necessary time off they need to recoup and regroup we will sea happier world.

Ted,

The 223 reference in my UserName is from 216.223.TREE which is a phone number I have.

I tried to register with bonner1040 (my UN everywhere else) being as Bonner is my last name but my registration was refused 4 or 5 times. Tom probly though Bonner was Boner and didnt like the reference.

Believe it or not I dont even own a AR-15 or Modern Sporting Rifle as they are called.

Here is a link to the Chinese tragedy
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/20...l-knife-attack/

Believing that these attackers dint have access to guns is ludicrous. There are an estimated 40,000,000 privately owned guns in China and 710,000 in Japan.(Karp, Aaron. 2007. ‘Completing the Count: Civilian firearms.’ Small Arms Survey 2007: Guns and the City, p. 67. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 27 August. )

That ranks China and Japan as 102nd and 179th in terms of per capita gun ownership. While far lower gun ownership than the USA there are still plenty of legal firearms and of obviously untold illegal ones.

Where did that come from??

Banjo,

It came from the Osaka Massacre
"Takuma was diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder, Antisocial personality disorder, and Paranoid personality disorder. He was later convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. The sentence was carried out on September 14, 2004.[3] "

Funny how Americans seem to only empathize among themselves, while turning a cold shoulder to the slaughter of innocents abroad at their own govt's hands as nothing more than collateral damage, as our imperial crusades abroad drone onward.

How does it feel to be a dissident to wholesale slaughter?

If you insist on slaughtering innocents abroad in the name of Natnl security?

The least you can do is take a good hard look at the fruits of your white collar crimes abroad.

We are our own worst enemy now.

Thanks for the links Ted. I think its obvious that legislature similar to Japans will never be practical here in the US. Its an interesting case study though.

I believe society needs to study these a holes that do this type of thing to try to stop it from happening again, but the media spot light should not be on them. This is what these sicko's want.

Deal surely, swiftly and decisively with the criminal. They are the ones who decided to commit the crimes.

As long as we continue to make excuses for them, excuse their behavior, attemt to shift blame for their actions we will continue to see increasing numbers of such events and more bold attemts by the depraved.

If the madmen are found medically, mentally incompetent, remove them from society to protect them and society from harm.

If the madmen are found to be competent then remove them from society, without fanfare, without the celeberity they so crave, permanently.

Such people, while potentially and remotely rehabilitable, have no place or role in society until, if ever, they are rehabilitated.

Restricting honorable people by removing freedoms in an effort to prevent such atrocities from happening is like crating your dog because your cat killed a bird.

It is unjust for the dog and won't keep the cat from killing again. All it does is make you feel good because you at least did "something" about the atrocity.

If you were trained it would be possible to seperate the future nuts out at age five. Their parents should also be sent to the reformatory as they are the probable cause. Better lock up grandpa too.

Then there's the 9,999 out of 10,000 abused or genetic imperfects that go on to be your co-workers, teachers etc.

The world's population being 6 billion too many should be factored in to the stress we live with.

We'll know if the shooter's autopsy toxicology report is positive for SSRI's?

Right?

What about the theatre shooter in CO?

Do legal pharma corp's have enough political clout to cover up the truth?

Does the public even know what a Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor is?

Does the MSM even try to answer these pertinent questions?

Well, there yu go...
