Video: Foam, foam foam ... and lovin it.

I plan on using foam some day. I won't use it all that much, but I think it can be a tool. But, I won't be chunking out logs to my groundies with it. /forum/images/graemlins/ahhhhh.gif

We've used tires and 3', smashed down brush piles; anything with proper give will work to de-accelerate. Sometimes i place 2 logs pairalllel with the lay, then trestle other logs across. Notch the up side and start a backcut on the bottom side; leaving cut only 1/2 way or so.

The idea is if it takes 1000# of force to snap the log, that is 1000# not transfered to ground/ dissipated; i call it a mechanical fuse of sorts. felling across logs also can spread out the foot print of the force too; in addition to the 'blowing of the mechanical fuse' dissipating force.

Another idea for the mental toolbox, might be somewhat limited for application (ie. 2' diameter Red Oak chunks bite real hard if you can't get out of the way fast enough) but definately a concept that might come in handy.

Now just to be clear 'fagots' was used in a derogatory manner to describe inept groundsmen/rope runners? If that is the case, then I think better protection is followed by the principle I try to carry for my business. That is there are no cheap, unskilled labourers. Means I can't turn $65-$85 an hour on an $8-$10/hr grunt, but the skill and professionalism of a skilled crew is in the end more productive and safer 'cause a climber is more apt to let ropes run. Reason? 'Cause they know what it's like to get bounced. The whole 'do unto others' thing.

"Fagots" ain't nothing but derogatory and instigating, and should be ignored as best as possible.

Lordy.

Oh please, even if you put a dictionary explanation the critics have to surface.

When we did the big cuban palm we didn't do the foam idea coz the palm logs were just too big and wild ... it's a common sense approach.

Now if we weren't able to run the logs the way we did with the cuban and I had a really confined spot on slate or something I would have cut the blocks in halves or quarters ... done that before, like carving up a cake.

It's pretty much a neccessary thing in our environment and dropping on piles of brush sucks ... tyres suck too coz they cause bounce ... this is what I have been doing for 7 odd years now ... too easy.

[quote = SteveBullman] they have safety harnesses and fliplines

And how does that stop you sliding down the pole?

When you see me either clean or TD palms you'll see either 2 lanyards (one choked off) or a lifeline choked off in addition to a lanyard. Now I reckon a palm would be the closest thing to one of those 80' poles and you wont see me without using both.

Check AS archives, not too long ago I read a thread about a guy who was killed when he slipped on a 30' palm.

Also check the thread at TH for the pole climb video, apparently a competitor broke their back when they fell.

im not sure how much slack they have on those fliplines but i would assume if they fell on a spar that size they would probably stop.....emphasis on the probably.
i was once told that the guys used to come down so quick to win they'd break ankles and all sorts so there were markers put on the spar that they had to stick a gaff in on the way down. is this true?

its true steve, something around every 15". I've done the pole climbing championship, many moons ago. the climbers have a safety clipped to them that runs through a pulley at the top of the pole, belayed by a grounds man.
I did hear that someone cracked the 12 second barrier recently?

Mark, I dont think others are chiming in just to criticise, but Ekka has been fiercly critical of other treecrews, so has to accept a certain amount of skepticsm / criticism over his methods.

I agree with you, on those little palms, I cant see a well trained ground crew getting injured - but it would never pass a safety audit...

Ed I don't believe in the video Ekka sent that there is any pulley or belay man. They do have a strap around the pole. I think what slows them down when they slide down the pole is the splinters from the previous climbers!

In the US, I'm not sure what the regs are. in the World championships, and all the regional events I've seen, they have a belay, purely to catch them if they fall.

Having said that, I believe its an eronious comparison. you wouldent compare F1 car racing to how you drive a car on the road.
What Eric is doing is everyday. Those poleclimbers do it several times a year.
The more you do something, the probability of something going wrong increases.
Also, if the poleclimbers fall, they injure themselves, not others. If you misstime the throw on one of those lumps, your going to hurt someone.

Ok, ok, enough squabblin about foam.

I have worked with Eric and the foam. /forum/images/graemlins/date.gif

I think to understand it you must know these are not big palms. Look at the pics, there are not 20 meter co-co palms. They are not 15 meter Canary Island palms (pigs).

These are small palms in yet even smaller locations. People plant these smaller palms in horrible places and Eric has found a good solution to an odd problem.

For what I do or what many, maybe even most of us do, they simply would be useless.

I don't even see a problem with him chuckin' them down to Colin. You can get away with things when you understand and have a good tempo with your coworkers. Puff, puff, pass, don't foul up the rythm...

I think people (most) have a problem seeing Eric chuck stuff onto foam next to a coworker because it is not the safest though it works and after seeing him be critical of other outfits, it is a bit like the pot and the kettle or as the Aussies say, the armpit and the ...well..you know.

Snow is getting old, I miss the Queensland sun.

You make a good point, Nate.

They are TINY palms, ain't they!

I hardly ever get the chance to TD tiny trees, it must be nice!

know what you mean dude, kinda like having a day off when they do rare their ugly little heads huh!

[/ QUOTE ]

Steve I've got to agree with you on the ugly little heads thing.

we don't have palms in ohio, does the wood float? tossing em in the pool and turning on their creepy crawler seems safer than telling Miguel to "catch this man"! nice sound track on the vid though

The darn things sink plus when pools have liners you must be extremely careful.

A sharp edge could cut the liner, you can even have a frond come down butt first and spear the liner ... when the liners are aged they are more likely to tear, that was an old one and thin.

Also, the sawdust from the palm will sink and block the filters. If they have a sand filter it will contaminate the sand which means the filter has to be repaired or replaced.

The pool can also get discoloured and need a lot of chemical treatment to get it back to sparkling so avoid the pool unless it's just the odd cut.

Never use that echo bar oil, it's red in colour and can turn the whole pool brown! I always do my best to try and stop the spray from the saw going in the pool.

I tell the customers to vac out the bottom by turning the filter to waste and topping the pool up, take the screens and baskets out and vac to waste ... then top up.

eric i wasn't going to say anything, but i saw you pointed it out with bigjohns post. BUT MY 6 YEAR OLD GIRL LUCY ASKED HOW COME THAT MAN IS ONLY USEING ONE HAND? i've done alot of palms TD's bring a small plastic wedge with you. I'm not saying i have never one handed a saw before but i always try not too, and you didn't have to then with a wedge. NOW THAT I SAID THAT I PICKED UP SOME FOAM TODAY FOR TOMORROW THANKS..
