are you adjusting the slack in the eye sling by moving the half hitch further from the bowline if the area is tighter and need less slack in the system?

Another way to remove the slack in the system is to leave the attachment point a few inches above the VSL and then take a bight of the VSL up and attach (shackle) then pretension with a GRCS. We will use a redirect at the base of the tree built with a 3/4 yalex eye sling and another shackle. It is important to place this as low as possible to avoid shock loading the GRCS. There are a lot of variations on the VSL, some simple, some more complex, but the basic technique should be in every tree workers tool box.
