Shock load.
As I said earlier, I work for a company in the Tahoe area a couple times a year doing removals. As that is a long days drive one way from my place, I receive pics and vids of the jobs, and we have a lengthy discussion about the trees and terrain. I have much trust in the man who has eyes on the trees, so together we come up with a basic game plan for each job, and a bid that is usually pretty much on the money. Neither lazy nor stupid, me thinks.Ok but its not smart practise and very lazy
To be absolutely honest with you... the main reason I put the $ in the title was because I was trying to attract views and hopefully subscribers.. I thought it was a novel and catchy title.... My goal was to get 1,000 views in 24 hours. As the day went on it became clear that in order to do that I had to post links all over the tree forums and facebook...
While the vid did get a lot more early views than my normal ones do (with a few exceptions), it didn't create much of a bump in subscribers...
This whole point that you need to be there in person to see the cost of a job is partial true. I agree That for a precise number you should see it in person. But with some reasonable info I can get pretty close give or take. Some times a little high sometimes a little low. I try and look at thing s in person but circumstance sometimes don't allow. Rico explained 1 such situation. Here is my point, having done a lot of blow overs, stromdamage, compromised trees and such, a video showing the general situation is enough info for me and I guess other reasonably experienced tree guys to conclude that 6k was pretty far off. In one of Daniels posts he says he will talk with the customer and make sure they are happy and something to the effect that they donate $5000 to charity. Would be hard to say anything bad about donating to charity, that seems like a diversion though. From that it seems he may be admitting, in a indirect way that 6k was over priced. This damn thread would have been way smaller if it could have been said, yeah overbid it and everything worked out good so I may refund the customer some money, simple. That takes humility though. Instead of trying to defend this inflated cost with all this talk of risk, options and issues hogwash. 6k was thought cheaper than 10k that's how he arrived there. Conclusion, this was not an exceptional or overly complicated job with some risk, that was accomplished with reasonable technique. We can debate some of the details for sure.As I said earlier, I work for a company in the Tahoe area a couple times a year doing removals. Oh imagine his disgust.I’m just going to to drop this and then I’m out.
This wasn’t a instructional video, claiming advanced techniques or any other such crap. It’s prety obvious there is a hunger for attention, and this is best ignored. I doubt anyone is going to make life changing behavioral advancements from online banter.
No one but the customer or the industry as a whole is going to be harmed by this video and point of view. This behavior has gone on for as long as I’ve been paying attention it’s only gotten worse over the years, because it’s been fed..
Just imagine if this customer found this thread! That would be priceless karma!
The tulip poplars in this area are pretty large, if you’re going to be in a tulip poplar in this area you know you’re going to need at least 250+ ft of line to prune it with you have to re tie or some at some point. Then you get to do the sketchy ass limb Traverses with lines you the two lines you set from the grounds. Judging by the size of that tree and the trees around it, and knowing the trees in that area, that is most definitely at least a 120’ poplar if not more.More nonsense.... with the exception of the trees not being 150' tall.. some of them could have been 120 though, or close to it.... I was ad libbing and made a mistake at 150, then brought it down to 120 as a correction.. 100 to 120 would have been more accurate... Maybe I could have edited that video to cut out 150, but really liked the whole intro as one long unedited piece...
I agree 100% very good point.Strange. Seems we are constantly complaining that we (as an industry) aren't valued enough, aren't paid enough, aren't seen as professionals, or can't hope to compete with the hacks/lowballers. Then when we see a competent, knowledgeable guy charging and getting what he's worth we complain about that.
I think we tend to forget that what we do is not easy and certainly not something just anyone can do. And too many of us price jobs in terms of what it's worth to us rather than what it's worth to them. A lot of our customers make more before lunch on Monday than we will all week. They don't blink about the price if they think you are worth it. Daniel knows what he's worth.
Where can i watch your video brother?Rico, I moved to the front range in Colorado 6 years ago. Got married have a son, things have changed, except I still have love for this and I am pushing 30 years climbing. I grew up smashing down big trees and knew nothing about treebuzz and this tree culture and never got into flag tapping. I try and remain respectful, but I see a lot of back slapping and BS. Thanks for watching my video, it was my 1st video and felt it was worth documenting.
