Tulip tree MURDER!

Location
LI, NY
Tuesday at the office, here is a medium/large Tulip tree in a backyard for removal. Easy simple tree to tackle. Not much impeding our work. Did the brush by 12.15 then did some wood after lunch. Hope you dont get too bored with the film !!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HH_SfCGMss

Got all the wood down today, felled the stem, towards the fence, and the bugger split right in 2! It had been struck by lightening 3 years ago, the back stem, and there was significant charred wood in the centre of the tree... I took some film of it all, so will probably put another video together.

MistaBen great job. Looked like the tallest tree around. Looked really healthy, musta been 100 year old Tulip eh? You lucky dog you. That limb at 6:40 wanted a kiss goodbye for sure.
Questions:
-How many guys did you have on the ground?
-Did you get video of the wood?
-Did you guys break anything?

Yes I am doing the wood video now
when I felled the stem, it split right in two, and the one half squished the fence, but the owner is having that area fixed up, as the tree was wrcking it anyway. Plus, we straightened up the fence.... video coming...

No freaking way was it that old, the growth rings were big! 1 inch! Might be about 50 years old. got struck by lightening 3 years back, hence that big burn scar on the back stem. In the next video, you can see how much the middle got scorched by the electricity! Amazing!

I liked that vid.

Have a question for you. I noticed you tied a lot of the limbs off 1/3 or 1/2 way out. What were your resons for doing so on this removal. I know I have my reasons but it's hard to see the whole story sometimes from the helmet cam.

Good job.

Here is the second video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHXlJdTADXI

The owner was replacing all the broken up concrete around the pool, that the tree had ruined. Also she was ripping up the brick where I laid the stick, so she wasn't fussed if it got tore up. And she hates the fence around the pool, but the county insist she has it for some reason. I tried to remove it initially, but it wouldn't budge. When the stem fell, it split right in two, making it easier to cut up, but one half touched the fence post, which we fixed and made better than it was before.

Mid tying the 'work' lends itself to the 'work' landing in the right direction for the chipper, and is a little easier for the groundsmen to deal with, as you can see from the video. That one piece, long limb over the house, I tied it off a fair way out and notched it in the direction of the rope, to clear the roof. I knew it would come back at me a little thats why I jumped out of the way!

one thing i would recommend is on lighting damaged trees you can put heavy duty straps around . it will prevent what happened from happening . and it will also make it safer for you while you are in the tree . just be sure to put the ratchets on the back side of the tree to help prevent them from getting damaged . great job .

Yeah i get what your saying for sure. I won't generally mid-tie it for the the benefit of the guys on the ground. Certainly to give the piece some "persuasion" to get going the right way, I do all the time. There are a couple other circumstances that I'll use it but to each their own. Seems to work for you, so keep up the good work.

Lol that log didn't seem to care that fence was there, it's funny because it wasn't me.

Keep up the good work

Yes in hindsight I could have added a few straps, but i mainly did all the rigging of the good stem, so it wasn't much of a concern.

Bz. I laughed too at what happened, the owner is landscaping that whole area so it was not much of a biggy.

Thanks for the support :)

It's funny sometimes when stuff goes wrong the only thing you can do is laugh. It's one of those "holy sh@t! didn't see that happening". I certainly remember a couple times, still makes me giggle. They make for good stories.

The day was not that long, had the brush done by 12, then rigged the back stem down. out of there by 3.30 on the first day.

Still looked like a long day. Wow, that was something, the trunk just came apart. I say yes to the ratchet straps. How did you feel about that thing coming apart like that after rigging logs off it?

I think it split because of the way the two stems were positioned when it hit the deck, the back stem hit after the first, hence the splitting of the fibres lengthways. Rigging wood on that tree was as safe as any other tree I feel.

Yes that white rope is the forestry stuff, nice rope! That machine is a hire one, and they only have a bucket, wish it had a grab instead!!

....and a smoother detachment, better direction, and maximum clearance when needed. Some nice work there Ben.

Hey Ben,
Don't ever criticize another video of mine.. YOU ARE CLUELESS.. you don't know the difference between lightning scorch and included bark. If you had been paying even a little attention to my vids, instead of talking crap you'd have both expected the co-dom to split upon impact, and known how to jump the trunk past the fence.. Piece of cake...

Save your BS justifications.. you ought to be embarrassed posting such crappy work... and anyone else that's been kissing your az is just as full of crap as you are.
