Tulip tree MURDER!

Good stuff man. What camera did you film this with? Also, whats up with using the wrench to ascend then switching to DRT? You doing that just so you can pull your rope back easily?

Rob is the boss of my firm.

I Wrenched back up the tree, after lunch, to try out my new hand ascender with foot loop, still getting the hang of the motion. switched back to DdRT because I feel alot happier on big takedowns with that system. I need to get a different tether, maybe that petzl thingy, because what I have right now I dont like. Climbed some maples with it yesterday though and got on ok.

O hvae the Contour Roam 1080HD camera, and I filmed in 720p HD. Glad you enjoyed it :)

I just skipped through the Daniel efficiency video, I saw some pretty dangerous stuff going on, Patrick Epps one handing and pushing with the other while cutting mid torso. Kettle pot black? Come on, lets not open up a huge can of worms, lets just play nice and get on with our little lives in peace and harmony. Its only cutting trees.

I put that up on purpose, as Pat did not want to listen to my strong criticisms of the technique.. Its even worse if you look closely, he cut an unintentional bypass dutchman on the face of at least one of those pieces.. That bypass is primarily caused by making the bottom cut first, which you also do..

Since Pat didn't listen to me, I thought, let him listen to all the criticism from his peers on line, that are sure to come, when its put up on the boards... Page after page of raving about the danger of those big rotating pieces, and near balance point tie offs etc.. and not one peep about the unintentional bypass and one-hand cutting, mid torso... NOT ONE! on any of the boards...

That was a clear sign about the level of ignorance in this industry.. The advanced techniques were criticized as dangerous, while the dangerous techniques went completely unnoticed..

SO in the face of such ignorance, I AM once again HAPPY to stand alone telling you that one handing, just inches away from your left arm is needlessly dangerous, while the rest of the world pats you on the back for wiping out that fence! LOL

Whoa Daniel, Ben already said he fixed the fence and major construction is about to be done around the pool. Cut the dude some slack the video was good. Now as for the Pat Epps efficiency video, that was the first of your videos I watched before I even knew who you were on the buzz. I am willing to bet that you are now changing your tune about why you posted that video. In the running commentary you are quite praiseworthy of Mr Epps aptitude in efficiency and what a skillful climber he was. Correct me if I am wrong but you even stated he was probably the best black climber around which I am sure is quite the compliment. If I am wrong I stand to be corrected. Now you are saying you were trying to show his disregard to safety and try to show him up by exposing his techniques to his peers on the buzz. Who does that? I think you might be changing your tune to maybe save face for your sometimes unnecessary harsh criticism of your peers here on the buzz. Some food for thought.

Read back through the thread dude... Pat's a great climber .. productive, efficient, (generally) safe, with a great attitude, lots of knowledge and experience.. There's no one else I'd rather work with on big trees. But he's not perfect. He's another one of those big strong climbers that thinks he can one hand a saw safely. And he probably will continue to do that for the rest of his career. And probably without incident. DOES NOT make it safe! All he has to do is catch a stick or stub on the back side of the cut with the kickback zone of the bar and game over!

What I said is exactly what happened... I was running the camera when he made those cuts.. I overdubbed my commentary with music.. it was harsh!

Here's a quote from the original thread:
"Pats is good but not perfect. If you look closely, you can see a couple mistakes he makes on bypass cuts on his notches on the bigger wood in part 2, and there is one low backcut. Although I've invited him over to review the tapes, he hasn't made it yet, so we haven't discussed this yet. We all can improve on some aspect of our understanding or skills.

That said he is a great climber. Fast, efficient, safe, experienced, aware and cares about the people on the ground. I really love working with him and was thrilled to be able to capture some great tree work in this video."

Fair enough Daniel, point taken. Your criticism style can be a bit abrasive and lot's of dudes have a problem with it as it can come of in a not so sincere light. However that said you do make good points when you are ready. We are not perfect in any way and the buzz is just a way to share knowledge and our passion for the work we do. Nice way to meet others who work in the same field. No fun in being harsh and critical when it only isolates oneself with your peers. I have said it before it's not what you say but how you say it, and believe me I don't always practice what I preach. But I do make a effort here as I don't want to offend my peers who I have never really met personally. Just my two cents.

I didn't start the nastiness.. I'd be a whole lot more forgiving if he wasn't such an azzhole... he has it coming.. and look at you... you make some crap up and throw it our there.. You are FOS too...

The problem with Danny boy is he runs his mouth instead of his helmetcam.

Lots of great pros here posting up vids of great technical work performed from their perspectives up top.

It's quite telling when a member ridicules another's work from the safety of the ground chair without ever posting himself up top doing it the "right way".

I've no doubt dudes like Gord, Reg, Rog, Taylor and Mark are all great technical riggers because I've seen their vids, and appreciate their professionalism and honesty in telling it like it is from a hands on perspective.

Unfortunately I've yet to see Daniel post a vid of his own climbing prowess in action from any perspective other than a groundie.

Ben's vid here is good stuff, and unless Danny boy has vid of himself doing it better and more properly? He should limit himself to positive comments.

Ben's a great climber, an honest guy, and his vid proves it.

Really? I am full of shite, bro you don't even know me. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. I know your type as you are so vocal here, now tell me if I am wrong. You like putting others down because you don't feel good about yourself. You want to teach not for sharing knowledge but for building your poor self esteem and inflated ego, now that is truly sad. Lastly your disrespectful attitude towards others stems from some bullying you incurred sometime in your life and has festered into adulthood causing you to lash out similarly. As I say I only pick this up by reading your posts to others. You have a nice day, I won't waste anymore time on this I am not one to take kindly to cyber bullying or for that matter any type of bullying.

I am willing to bet that you are now changing your tune about why you posted that video. In the running commentary you are quite praiseworthy of Mr Epps aptitude in efficiency and what a skillful climber he was. Correct me if I am wrong..

Ya you're wrong... that's just another way of saying FOS.. and then you keep making up cyberspace stories as if they are true... What do you call that??? FOS is what I call it..

Fair enough man. I too am still learning and getting used to the wrench. Went back and looked at your videos and it looks like you did what I did when I started. Took the stock tether and tied the wrench to one end, then the other end to your hitch climber or a carabiner. I HATED it. I found that it worked alot better if I made the cord into a loop using opposing double fisherman's knots like it came. Then I girth hitched it to the wrench on one side, and girth hitched the other side to a carabiner. Way better. However, now I have the Petzl dog bone and its even better. Just my experience anyways.

Keep making the videos though man. The last thing I want to do is get involved in who is doing things right and safe and who isn't. I do however enjoy watching tree videos, no matter good or bad. I just like what I do, and enjoy seeing other people do what they do. Different areas, different trees, different crews. Sure maybe it is alot of up and down, but personally I enjoys that. Just the same as I appreciate those who post videos of interesting things that fall outside of the day to day. At the end of the day I enjoy watching tree videos, even if I did just spend all day doing tree work. I guess I just have issues.

Daniel,

Geez man, you got a chip on your shoulder about something?

I'm sure 99% of us saw the 1 handing. For me I didn't like it either, but on the same hand I'm not going to chasdise him for a 2 second clip out of 10mins(?). There was a lot he did very well that came from watching, learning and experience, this is what I was complimenting.

There are a select few people on this forum who's opinion I truly value. Some of them even had positive comments for this vid. For example Tom, Mark, Reg, Mikepoor, Allmark, Taylor and believe it or not Riggs and jomoco. There are others so don't be offended if you don't see your name. You might be part of this group unfortunately you come off as a bad mixture of vinegar and water that the urge to cuff you completely interupts the urge to listen to you.

Can't think of one positive thing to say Daniel? There's a better way to voice concerns you may have.....work on it.
