My first thought was Pseudotsuga menziesii(Douglas Fir), but the bark platelets dont look chunky enough. Its probably not even a conifer.

Cedrela odorata, Spanish cedar...but you gave it away with the filename, I've never heard of the tree before.

Cigar smoking lol.

You're right that it's not a conifer. The species (and a couple of very similar species) are found almost all over North America.

That was a good one B'Bull, I looked at the attachment and saw the word 'Cedar' in the filename and just assumed you were throwing us off the scent. Sometimes I think too much.

Right you are grover. It's a pretty unusual form for a Big-leaf Maple. It's on a golf course near Vancouver BC.

I've never seen one in real life, would love to climb one someday. They're the tallest growing decidous trees right? Would be good to see more pics of other Big Leaf Maples if you have them.

Few big leaf maple are over 160 feet. I believe, historically, liriodendron grew to 220 feet in the SE USA forests....They are the largest acer in the world (also the largest leaf-sometimes 18 inches across) Some are approaching 37 feet in circumference....

only approached in height( deciduous trees) in NA by black cottonwood.....

I love working on them...they take many forms, sometimes classic as is Gord's stately specimen, but usually very varied.

Nope you were right with the Poplar. This one is growing on a floodplain.

Black cottonwood, eh, gord? The resolution made it hard to identify...I was thinking hemlock or Big leaf maple....

I just spotted a lombardy poplar in a backyard, maybe only a mere 25 feet from a house. (I was bidding next door) It appeared to be at least 10 feet dbh...and might have been the 2nd largest I've seen...the largest known in North america fell dec '06, it was 35 feet in circumference..it took out two houses...I'll have to go back for photos...it has been well cared for, lots of thinning and cleaning has been done.

Is it one of these?

Populus heterophylla, Populus trichocarpa or Populus angustifolia?

Any pics of the full tree? was it tall?
