Trees from a distance

Nope. This was a very large piece, the part shown is 1/4 of the log, so the heart wood portion is very old, look more at the sapwood parts.
On the right track as far as tough wood, but not oaks.
 
Gymnocladus dioicus...just to throw it out there

Prunus virginiana or serotina? Or Malus? I don't feel that strongly about those guesses but I am temporarily stumped. I feel like I recognize it, but I just can't get it!

Yeah, I thought about that one, too.
I just didn't think hemlocks got that big to produce a split log as big as the one in the photo.

Nope, we don't get any hemlock, pine, apple, or cherry that get that big. Mostly because its zone 3, but also because the soil is a ripe 8 on the pH scale.
Remember this pic is of 1/4 of a log and is still 10" thick.
Unless there are no more guesses I'll divulge the answer in an hour or two.
