Tree Work magazines?

You are small business.

That magazine is very small compared to the " magazine giants" and I'm sure it's a struggle.

Look forward to reading your article David. I've been pushing people to subscribe to Arb Climber magazine since they first came out.

I have a few articles that I'm working on for them which hopefully will be finished this winter. Ade Scott over there is a great guy to chat with and very willing to listen to us arbos.

Being involved in SPRAT now, I also subscribe to the main magazine Technical Rescue, which is also first rate. Here's a link:

David, using friction in a tree is hardly new thinking to a seasoned climber. Theres definitely times where it'll give you an extra margin if safety, and other times when its much less relative. Or maybe some people don't know, or have forgotten.

Your article had better be good now you've built it up so much.

I've looked through a few arbclimber mags, nice publication. But the thing is, magazines just don't the same weight that they once did....most if the same and more info is readily and freely available on line. Forums for example are live and interactive, magazines are quite the opposite. Its nice to see your name or article in a magazine etc, but I personally don't think its the best way to reach people now days. I'd like to see your article/work here on TB, for several reasons. Let us know what you decide. Cheers.
I did an article titled : Friction, Where Should it Be in our Rope Rigging Systems.
It was an exhausting amount of work to write it and I think very important to bring the masses up to speed on "new" thinking.
I didn't know of anyone else but me to write it. I go into many tools, as much as I could so that it isn't an X-Rigging Ring article.
But since I'm part of Xtreme Arborist Supply and I do of course talk about the rings and the THT; it could be viewed like self-promotional to some magazines.
Arb Climber ran an article from Kevin B. on the rope wrench; which is the best person to speak about it. So I'm thinking they will run mine.
I think it is very good and I want to share it.
IF no magazine, I'll ask March Chisholm if I can post in here in the "expert speaker article" place.

Or maybe I'll do both.

Well dang; I didn't realize I "built it up" so much.

Yeah, I guess with magazines the author doesn't get much or any feedback.
Forums are way more beneficial.

Article mentions past ways of adding friction in the tree. Don't worry; I know it's been around a long time, but I felt the industry kind of went away from it and didn't improve on it.

Maybe don't expect much. .... it's my first article and therefore probably sucks.
I'll see if it's cool with arb climber if I post it on the buzz for you all to tear apart.

Good points made about the value of magazines to readers possibly declining and the relative value to readers of forums being possibly on the increase.

I have been wishing for a long time that the Buzz had a handy link to a way to 'Donate', I get so much value from this Forum and have for a long time wanted to contribute financialy to it's care and upkeep or finiancial success as I feel bad just benifiting, benifiting, and not giving back with $. I would most like to just pay a re-occuring voluntary 'subscription' that I set or could change if I ever wanted. Any possibility of a thing like that being set up Mark? David (XMAN) has a simple to use payment method on his website that I can just use a credit card on.

Hi Merle,
I'm not against it, but so far we've let the sponsors do the supporting. Of course they are betting that you find value here and pass that value on to them. I really appreciate you publicly stating your appreciation though. It makes me smile!:)

I bought the first 4 issues of ArbClimber from Wesspur, and it really is an excellent magazine. My only complaint is that I would rather see fewer product reviews and more "how to" articles. Maybe that just means they need to get more high quality articles from the experts and innovators?!

Well, if you're not against it, ...what would it take to make it happen Mark? If I were sitting across the table from you, buying you a nice dinner at some tree convention I would tic off a bunch of things that I have learned about only as a result of being on the Buzz. Also a list of ways that I make and save more money as a direct result of this site. I'm feeling guilty here.

That's great to hear Merle. Thanks for sharing that! Don't feel guilty at all. Just sharing your appreciation is payment enough. Giving back to others is what this site is all about. You've done that and can continue. I'll think about your suggestion but for now just enjoy the site and feel free to thank our sponsors when you get a chance.

Magazines are here to stay. take for example National Geographic, Pop Scie, Moto, Surf etc. Just less so in hard copy. e-copies are more convenient in almost every way. Arbclimber in my opinion is truthful, factual and up to date with out bias written by some well respected individuals who want to see you get home safely and make our lives a lil bit easier.

I would say Arbclimber is entertaining and inspiring. Ade sets a really great tone for the mag. He is a really funny man who has roots in arboriculture. He has a great appreciation for arbclimber talents and sees those talents transfer well into rescue. I believe there is quite a few rescue techs that are arbclimbers as well.
Arbclimber is the best there is for what it is titled. the contributions of arbclimbers from the world over that have shared their tools, techniques and thoughts on forums, print and video are represented.
UK ,US, Australia, NZ, Austria, Canada etc. Very international feel to this mag. Really is a climbing arborist magazine.
Looking forward to your article David.
Thanks for your efforts in advance.

O and David instead of 'cross-publishing', consider that you'll probably want to revise it after feedback so it could be a new-enough piece for another mag or two. Don't be shy; spread it around! Recommend getting reviews ahead of time tho...;)

Some mags are very touchy about cross-publishing, ime.
