Here’s an odd one. A large white Oak that cracked but didn’t fall over. It’s doing a better than average job of compartmentalizing the carnage.

I found this growing on a sycamore limb around 1990 and put it on display at a Penn-Del meeting. Dr. Shigo was the main speaker and took a good look at this and wanted it. I couldn't give it up sorry to say but he did get some photographs. Loved that guy. It's been hanging in the rafters in my garage for the past 20 years. The camera flash doesn't do it justice.

65' up a 130' fir.

The oak and fir were touching before taking massive weight off the damaged oak.

Now a 2-3" gap.

Both trees to be fully removed, soon.

Repeat what I said. I've forgotten important parts of thee story that have to be right if its told. tracking down the details would be much more time consuming than I care to invest.

Suffice it to say, they're safe.

Way off topic but a few years ago we had a epic outbreak of Sooty Bark Disease. The same stuff that arborists suit up for in hazmat gear in Europe and where they cover loads of infected material to incinerate.
Anyway it turns out there was a sample of it sealed in a mill in Pullman Wa since the 70's, this sample was tested and actually found to still be viable!

I bet you have, took a class on it and got more personal with it. The big takeaway is I’ve seen it for years here and there.
In Seattle you can pretty much any maple that is declining has it.
