Tree ID collection

Good website Tom will pass it on to my boss.

Do you know of a certain tree? I only know the common name though. Something called a Kentucky Coffee/Bean tree saw it Virginia a few years back while staying out there. It has real big seed pods about a foot long and the seeds are about Lifesaver size, They are in a shiny hard brown case and some people say the seed pod brings you good luck. If I remember correctly the bark is white?

Tried to look for it on the website but to no avail.

Kentucky Coffee Tree is really cool and I wish people would plant it more often. Like the name says, male and female are separate plants, so if you dig the seed pods, be sure to get yourself a female tree. I believe a common nursery offering is the cultivar 'Stately Manor' and that is a male tree. The Native Americans used the seeds to grind and brew a (bitter) coffee-like drink. The seeds are way cool, embedded in this sticky, thick greenish goo inside the thick pods. I don't think they are friends of lawnmowers. Another good reason to plant a lot of them! Cheers, Rebecca

I orignally brought the seeds back to Scotland 6 years ago, gave them to friend to try and propagate them in the greenhouses at work. But then I left that company so never knew of there progress. But if there good for the Native Americans there good enough for me, as I live my life like a plains tribe sioux, Isna Lawica.

Hello Tom
Get web site. Thanks! This will be a good site to get pictures to test my technicans on their plant id.

I had to prune a "Crown of Thorns," Trifoliate-orange or Hardy-orange named Poncirus trifoliate last year. Do a search of it. By far the worst shrub I've had to prune.

Hope to talk to you soon tom.

Robert

These are Thorn Trees xanthophloea (fever tree) these trees are from the lowland savannahs of south africa, often from swampy areas. Some people believe that it may transmit malaria, but all it is the vector is the mosquito... But to me they are a pain to trim.. No fun
