Topping with exprience

The worst is when you see a 90-100ft tree topped at 60-70ft and all the interior foliage is removed because, you see it, and it's obvious that the person who did it could climb well enough to get way out to the tips of such huge trees. But then the branch is just cut off flat, leaving just a big, long, defoliated lateral. And these old oaks almost always die afterward, which is when the customer finally realizes that they should have paid for a real arborist in the first place.

Hey mozza, We do crown reduce over here. WE just control the canopy with a combination of crown thinning and or reduction . I agree withyou it is a bit of an art. sometimes a mature hardwood will be reduced over time as to not stress the treeout.

Hello taitree, Thats exactly my point, When its done well a crown reduction can look great!! Im certainly not talkin about the 50% reductions people do or when people buthcer trees away from powerlines, They look horrible and as stated by others the tree does normally die! that kind of work is unacceptable anywhere.

Crown reductions are necessary for certain reasons but are you guys saying you just reduce the canopy strictly for aesthetic reasons?

Around here topping is proudly advertised because the term is deeply ingrained. That's the whole point of ISA's anti-topping campaign.

My boss will NOT top a tree and lives by that. Where I worked previously the owner would do anything to make a dollar. Then when I came to work where I am at now I learned how critical it was to top a tree. If a customer wants a tree topped and we cant talk them out of it with our knowledge and brocures we will simply walk away from a job. Besides the fact that it is unhealthy for the tree it is also ugly as heck.

The same old dilema. How to treat an age old warrior that has withstood the mutilation practice of tree topping. Restructure verse complete removal? Each site comes with its own unique peculiarity and special circumstance's.

Chip, your phone book has one arborist listed (ta daaaa!), and under Tree Service there are 6 with CA's and 3 that top--billy gaddy, jerry somebody, and tarheel tree.

That;'s a 2:1 ration, not bad. What is it in YOUR towns, y'all?

my boss used to top anything he got paid for, ive since talked him out of almost all toppings except small pears, we will only chase dead tops and cut back to green growth, just trying to make it safe for the homeowners and its nice to be able to prolong the removal process, especially for those tree lovers out there that hate to part with their giant "family" member.

Just another reason why not to top trees. We remove this silver maple that had split from advance trunk decay and heavy winds last night.

Noticed when pulling up to his home for the estimate, every tree had been topped at one time or another.

He said he thought it was a healthy tree. Better take a closer look at your trees next time.

Made short work of it with the crane. Had to go up; and over some other tree though.
