Today....

Mick, do you have any access to a rental lift? Looks like good climbing work if inaccessible. Looks like a good lift job if accessible.

Most of my work isn't lift- accessible, so I haven't seriously pursued any kind of lift.

Yeah, I guess.
A lift would have been better.
But he told me it couldn’t be done without a lift…

Little building was unhurt. Limb just laid down on it. Other lead o er the house got a bit tricky though. Rope angles were not the best.

Yesterday was a challenge - that ended successfully. It was a 30-inch DBH 100-foot tulip poplar with a hard back and side lean that needed to be pulled over. It's the one in the picture with the stem covered in vines. The stem landed suspended on the stump in the third picture. It required around 4,000# of pull to counteract the back lean and to bend the hinge. I used a rope puller as a safety line and secondary pull line. The GRCS pulled a 10,400# MBS rope through a block and back to the GRCS anchor tree for a 2:1 mechanical advantage. We took our time and were very thankful to God for the results. Today was a gentle, mixed bag. We hit a number of sites, shuffled equipment, ran some errands and fixed a chipper issue.

One of the sites was previously planted by a “fine gardener”. Oh great! Here we go! Two tulip poplars were installed at least 10” too deep.

They also put an umbrella pine on the north face of the house, slammed into a corner against two walls, and 3” too deep. We moved it to a place where they actually wanted more screening from the neighbor. We sluiced the root ball and pruned off all the SGRs down to the buttress root flare. The poor thing was in the ground for two years and still only had a root ball the size and shape of the original pot with nearly zero roots holding it in place.

I also splinted a metasequoia that lost its central lead. I’m really looking to see if this lateral truly assumes a vigorous dominant role after pruning out the weaker side and binding it upright.

Got back from my 10 day trip through the first portion of the Grand Canyon then hiking out, the rest of the group is still on the water and doing a full 24-day long trip. Great trip overall, nice group, good weather, cant beat the scenery.

Back to work tomorrow.
