This is the Akimbo

Wouldn't it be nicer if there were two holes on the part you connect the carabiner? For when using it with doubled line. Or would that change the geometry on the base and open the bottom part? It's just that I hate having two carabiners in the same ring next to each other. Especially since that halves the strength on them.

i have thought about that. i decided it wasnt really practical as the Akimbo is primarily an srt device, and two anchor points would add confusion. i have also given some thought to using a short tether like the spiderjack uses to move the rope end away from the bridge. that kind of thing will have to be an add on some time down the road or ill never get this thing done!

...the Akimbo is primarily an srt device...

I played around with using a ZigZag in conjunction with a Rope Wrench for SRT for awhile. I found it sadly wanting, as the ZZ is a DdRT device, and that's what it shines at doing. I'm very interested in the Akimbo mainly because it is an SRT device. I've been happy, so far, using separate systems. Perfect your SRT device, and the ideas will come later for a dual purpose version. Job security... we all know there will be a version 2 coming down the road, and we all know we'll pay the price of admission if a dual purpose version is what we want. Because, well... TOYS!

Not that throwing the ideas out there now is a bad thing, but I think you're correct in concentrating on SRT for now.

I didn't mention the Unicender because I have no experience with it. I saw reviews and comments about parts that wear out quickly (as well as the SpiderJack) and decided I'd wait around and see what else crops up on the market.

Yep, I ran the barrel for a year or two then my uni wore out. Never tried the drum, wrapping around the top drives me crazy!

If anyone ever gets the chance to meet Morgan Thompson in person, you'd probably agree that he's one of the coolest, nicest guys you could ever talk with. So, if Tom D. is the Godfather of SRT, then Morgan must be The Grandmaster or something like that. So many important people have been along the way and Morgan is no doubt one of them.

While talking with him he made me feel like an important person. He is standing there, the creator of an ingenious device, and he is wanting to hear from me...! Please Morgan, just talk about how cool you are and how awesome the Unicender is! Eric, you are not kidding, he is one of the coolest, nicest guys. It is neat, in this industry particularly, you meet the inventors and innovators and Grandmasters and all and find that they are the most genuine, nicest, willing to help, incredibly cool individuals.

Eric Whipple is another really superior human being. A lot could be said about him. I had such a great experience at the Expo getting to meet my idols and heroes and finding that they are actually even more brilliant and awesome than I had previously supposed...which is saying a lot...I had the bar set at what I thought was the top...of course it has to be set really high because we have the tools and the techniques to climb pretty high in this industry.

I would love to meet Jamie at some point...Jamie seems like he fits the mold and, although I am excited to watch the Akimbo progress, I am probably more excited to watch another brilliant mind and innovator progress in our industry. It was incredible to see the support he received and the steps he is taking to bring another incredible tool to the climbing community...we are always climbing higher.

Jamie any chance you could come to the East for the next Expo?

I would love to. I was bummed I couldn't make this one, but I used up all my vacation time on the birth of my new baby. Definitely shooting for the next expo!

That is so cool. Congratulations. I am glad you can still keep your priorities straight. You are talking about an actual human baby and not just referring to the Akimbo, right? Either way, good choice! I can't wait 'till the next expo. Who knows maybe you will a vendor.;)

Wow. Bromance in the air.

Wonder if carpenters feel so strongly about someone inventing a new cordless circular saw or plumbers about someone inventing a new pipe wrench that doesn't slip.

My (that kind of) admiration goes out to the career Arborist that gets up at 5 or 6 every morning, works 6 days a week at his craft, learns everything to improve td's, learns tree biology, treatments and general tree care, all while attending his kids' soccer games and little league games and is a loving husband.

Man, I could give 02 cents about these guys inventing these little gimmicks or techniques that would have evolved anyway. I saw guys doing SRT on roofs back in the 60's with camming devices. I do however really love a guy like Shigo that dedicated his WHOLE life to teach the tree guy something he otherwise would have never understood that is massively important.

I am on this thread because I will likely buy one of these things because I am a gear nut that cannot control himself.

I can take it.
I love you too Treevet.
