This is the Akimbo

I did enjoy the vid but if I may Jamie....the cam slot and spring gave me some bad thoughts, sorry. It was hard to tell and very few of use will ever use 8mm, and I know it is still being prototyped but...

Is there any chance that if the cam locks out or gets high enough, that rope could get entangled in the spring slot?

Jamie - I was like ML slightly nervous about the cam - maybe slightly different reasoning.

I wonder if the end of the cam (as shown - it could have changed already!) is too sharp - and might effectively pinch the inside and over stretch the outside of the rope as you descend damaging it? And also in the lock out position you describe - under a decent load there might even more opportunity to damage or even shear the rope.

It looks awesome - and of course those comments are just comments based on what I could see... so not worth much :D

Fantastic design. It did strike me though - You've a dramatic split lever when you open the thing - very cool. But could you implment a slide for the upper cam so that as the top arm raises, the cam moves further out closing the gap to the eccentric outer roller?

Paul, I had more of the same thoughts you did about the cam but without one in hand it's tough to tell. I don't want to cause undo concerns but want to just bring up some thoughts that may have just been an oversight. I know Jamie has to be racking him brain trying to work out all the little details. No new product is ever perect the first time or perfect to everyone.

Bottomline though Jamie is we are just trying to help if we see something, no hard feelings and can't wait to get my hands on one.

Guys, keep in mind that Jaime was showing how the cam would respond if the top eccentric cam was set grossly wrong. The cams, both top and bottom need to be adjusted for the rope being used. When set properly there is no way that the cam can move that much. The top cam is essentially a mirror of the bottom cam and there is just not enough room for it to move in a way that would allow the rope to get caught.
Remember, this is still in testing so rest assured, Jaime would not let anything so obvious miss his scrutiny.

Exactly, what he said ^^^
He did say he set it all the way, or most of the way open, paired with the smallest diameter rope to create this failure. But what about making a stop on the cam for the other direction too? Would it work to have the cam notched on the other side to catch on that pin to prevent the cam from traveling too far up? I can't say for sure, but I know someone who will solve it...Jamie!
I have confidence that Jamie will work everything out and make the Akimbo even more beautiful than it is...inside and out.

Thanks for the clarification. I fully understand the importance of those settings now. I had to go back and watch the vid again. As far as missing the obvious though I would politely disagree. I have never met Jamie but I am fairly confident that he is an intelligent man however sometimes the obvious gets lost in the details. Just look at all the great companies that have product recalls. None of them designed their products with any thoughts of missing something obvious.

thank you for posting that video for me, i haven't had the chance yet. ill try to answer all the questions i can.

Materials. all of the side plates and cams are aluminum. 6160 at the moment. probably 70 series later. all of the pins and the shackle are stainless. im looking at cadmium finished alloy steel for the bolts for strength and corrosion resistance.

The new cam shape. the new cam i showed in the vid is a quick and dirty proof of concept. ive been working on a part drawing for it. the "nose" will have a larger diameter than the one you see, and i hope to have the face grooved like the lower cam for less rope flattening. also, the slot was cut on the bandsaw, a milled slot can be stopped before it runs off the bottom edge.

The "lock out" function. the cams upward range of motion is limited by the spring pin. it cannot move up past a certain point. if the pin were not there, the "nose" can be made to length such that it will hit the eccentric pin and not be able to bypass it. the whole situation only occurs if the setting is far too loose for safe operation. when set correctly, it will not swing up as the there is not enough room.

im sure there was more. hope that clears some things up.

I agree. It is alway better to point thing out than to assume they will be taken care of. TreeBuzz is a great environment to throw ideas around and I appreciate IT ALL. I'm guessing Jamie doesn't mind any comments, complaints, quibbles, praise, lots and lots of praise to the Akimbo creator.

Cool.
Brilliant.

Negative feedback, and/or pointing out flaws and possible oversights is far more useful for me. I thought the Akimbo was as good as i could get it when i first posted, and i am glad to report that i was wrong.

A very good point and I agree. I will say again though that Jaime is working under a totally different circumstance than all those great companies. His goal is to perfect a vision, while theirs is to make sales.

Hello Jamie, saw your thread just an hour ago and was shocked!
Getting really interested in buying one of these as the public version will go out on market.
What will be the price for this device (just your estimations +-50$) and another question is about international shipping. Hope you can make it fly to Russia for me one day!=) With kindest regards, Peter.

Oh yes and some ;) Glad 'critique' is taken in the best spirit - this thing is going to be awesome. I'm very happy with the BDB for my limited use, but for many this will be a decent upgrade. I wonder what Gordon has up his sleeve... :burlas:

Some days I really wish I was an arborist - physical practical job, climbing and awesome toys to play with. (Others, not so much :D... )
