That has GOT to hurt. Hang in, get well soon. Maybe you can switch from the vicodon to 800mg motrin soon... I really hated vicidon last time I took it.
Props for telling the story and not equivocating like it's someone else's fault... That takes character. Maybe one of your mistakes was listening to the operator. Not that he shouldn't be able to give input but it makes me crazywhen someone changes the plan in the late stages... even if they have a better idea(which for me is often). It breaks your sequence and those things which you've compensated for (like the slipping sling) have to be re-calculated. I inevitably leave something out when I have to step back through a plan and adjust the variables.
I usually do what you did though, take the advice and occaisionally have a near miss... had a big tip roll on me the other day and foul my lifeline after adjusting a redirect at someone's suggestion. It was a good suggestion that made landing the tip a lot easier but I initially took my lines into account when I set that redirect and faile to when it was noted that I should adjust it... the piece was faced and tied and we were ready to go so I just moved it real quick and cut it.
Sorry to go on about that but I believe insticking with a plan unless there is a critical reason to change it... but since I'm new to tree work, I take pretty much any advice I get... I just wish I could get it a lot sooner than a minute bfore things go down.
I hope that foot heals up for you good as new.
