Stein Climbing Helmets

They'll be available in the US after the Expo, though they have been changed from the original design to meet ANSI specs.

Just how they've changed I don't know, but I believe Tom D. does, so maybe he can tell us a little more.

The clear visor DOES NOT meet ANSI regs., though they do if you're logging, because loggers follow OSHA code not ANSI.

Just a quick sidenote on the Stein helmets. If you use the clear visor, they do tend to fog a little in wet conditions from what I've been told. A solution to that is the product that I've listed below.

http://www.fogtech.com/raincoat.html

They also sell the regular FogTech which is by far the best anti fogging stuff out there. Trust me, I've tried everything.

The other thing with the Stein helmets is that you can fit a regular full mesh visor instead of the half face clear visor, which to me is better for protection.

This may sound crazy, but people spit inside of their goggles for anti-fogging while swimming, diving, snorkeling, etc...

I used to do it and it worked well. But, this was spitting into something where no air could get to it. I suppose spitting in a visor, that is exposed to air, may not work well at all.

It is worth a try.

Dont get too excited about Stein Helmets, if your used to wearing a Petzl Ecrin Roc, the Stein feels terrible in comparison.

Ok, what I should have said was, I wore a Stein helmet (super plasma) with ear defenders and the ridiculous fold down dark shades for a full day on a large Beech takedown and it felt like sh*t compared with my Ecrin Roc.

As long as Petzl are making the Ecrin Roc I'll be using it for treeclimbing, if they stop I'll switch to the Vertex.

Eugene from Silky Saws told me that he will be the US importer for Stein helmets. When i talked with him a while ago he said that his goal was to have them available through his dealers by Expo.

My faceshield got some scratches during climbing that are a bit annoying. I make sure that the helmet is stored inside a stuff sack with a fleece liner to reduce scratches.
