splicing Ice Tail

Howdy folks,
I'm wondering if anyone can share some info/experience on Samson Ice Tail friction cord. I've spliced technora in the past using the locked Brumell method, and correct me if I'm wrong since I've never had Ice Tail in my hands but it's said to be made of a soft weave of pure technora. Is it 'splicer friendly'? Will it hold a double fisherman's knot? (technora's kinda slippery). Any info is usefull and appriciated.
Thanks~

It is pretty splicer freindly. I've spliced it two different ways using the locked brummel with a full bury and also with just a straight bury.

It is NOT 100% technora. Each strand has a center of polyethylene to cut down on cost and weight. It is easier to splice than Tech12.
You need to get scissors that have an edge of hardened steel to cut it. ARS has a nice pair, #330. About $20.

Samson has released these instructions recently http://www.samsonrope.com/site_files/Eye_and_Eye_Tail_Splice.pdf They show how to make the eye-eye slings of Icetail. You'll probably have to adjust the measurements to get the exact overall length you want.

I cut vectran, technora, dyneema, etc w/ a ceramic bladed knife. It makes it through quite easily. If I don't have that handy, I'll use a utility knife that allows easy changing of razor blades.

I thought the core of each strand was polyester, but maybe I didn't look at it close enough. Either way, I think the Icetails construction is pretty smart. It's a good combination of high-tech fibers where we need them, and low tech fibers where they aren't gonna bother anyone.

Make sure you lock stitch!

Joann Fabrics has a great set of super inexpensive scissors that works great for Technora. They have micro serrations that allow you to chew through the rope with suprisingly clean cuts. The last time I bought them they were $ 3.00 a set. Most any serrated scissor cuts Technora pretty well.

I took a look at these directions and I'm wondering if step #6 is illustrated correctly??? From the instruction's text, I believe the tapered end is supposed to enter at mark D. I don't think that's what is illustrated.

Is it just me?

I just started using the icetail, like it, but would like to eliminate knots and see how that performs.

Thx,
T.

As I look at it, I think it's written correctly. Remember they are using a fid and a pusher, not a pulling fid (coat hanger) so they are pushing the rope in at D then out at the furthest X mark. The tails cross between the X's.

Let's see some pictures of what you make!

YOU'RE RIGHT! I looked at it again, more carefully. The description is right, and what they show at the bottom is right. But the more zoomed in drawing that I circled in RED does show an EXTRA pass through the rope. I think Samson intended for use to just do a locking brummell, then bury it. It wouldn't make sense to pass through again. I'll call and find out for sure.

See the pic to see the parts I'm talking about. Is this what you were talking about, tom?

That's it exactly. From what little I know, it just didn't look right. Thanks for clearing that up Nick!

I should get a little splicing time this w/e, so I'll try to get some pics up later.

Thx again,

Here's my first attempt at an eye-and-eye tail splice. Pretty disappointing. Maybe I shouldn't have started at midnight...

First big surprise came at step #7 (from Samson's instructions). When I started smoothing out the slack, the ends were about to disappear into the rope! How could they have wound up being so short??? I'm pretty sure I laid things out correctly.

I'm wondering if I did the taper (step #3) right? Instructions talk about a strand "pair." Anyone have a close-up pic of what this means? I removed 6 strands (total) from each end. Instructions show 6 strand pairs .

Tom, not a bad start. Regarding how many strands you should pull out- I think samson showed it right. I think their picture is for double-ended hollow braid (like tenex often is. If you pulled 3 pairs on each splice, then you did it right.

It looks like on the right hand eye, you should have buried the tail just a little sooner. The gap from the lock to the bury looks just a little long.

Often times when splicing, I will make the tails longer than what the directions call for. I'd rather waste 6" of rope than have to redo a splice because of an unsmooth crossover.

Nick,

I also thought the bury was not in the right place. What exactly is a "pick?" I think the directions called for doing the bury two picks away from the first bury. Is not easy to describe, but I thought a pick was a repeating strand -- not sure if that makes any sense?!

T.

Pic is a pair of strands side by side going in opposite directions. Better described as a "chevron".

See the pic...ture.
