Spike marks

Here's an Oak that we had to prune last week. Had a bad lead that came out and some hollow spots.

Close-up. Looking at this, I can't quite understand how some will say that spikes don't cause wounds- even in the lower trunk.

The pictures in Jerry's book, Fundamentals of General Treework are the best that I've ever seen. Someday I'd like to get samples of the same so that I can cut and sand them to get good pics.

Even on thick barked trees where the spike doesn't go into the cambium that marks last forever.

Cool looking tree Mark! tha must have been a blast to climb. I saw a beech this year and it had huge spike marks/scars. lost the pics though.
