Speed Ascent Setups

It has been way harder to effectively create a step on the bottom of my boot for my left foot than I thought it would be. I am on my way to see what sort of cinching straps I can come up with to keep it on there.

I did find a hand ascender that has a cam that locks open and then releases with one action. It came from a marbar that was in the toolbox on the truck when I started this job like 4 years ago. It appears to have a CMI sort of vibe to it, but there is no branding on it. I opened up the rope channel and shaved a thumb grip from the lock lever and now it is the fastest way that I can imagine to set a weight on a line.

Not as old as my Jammar, lol. Didn't realise newer hand ascenders don't have a nice 'quick release'. Will watch for this.

The stuff I'm used to has a pivoting lock lever on the bottom of the cam so that it is a down/out motion followed by a sweep towards the line. Much slower.

I think I've got it. I'll wrap the ends in an old radiator hose and tape up the step.

I will not be the only one giggling about how hard I try to not ropewalk.
I'm about to go practice jumping on a line and see if I can honestly get under 10 seconds.

About 50 practice setups and I'm averaging about 7 seconds if I don't bumble one of the four cams. I bought a new rope today which helped. It's rather stiff. Samson Mercury.
I had to scrap the goofy step, but mostly because I haven't had time to practice.

You'll have to post a pic of your setup!!

Mercury sounds interesting, you must be one of the first people with it.

I have some Samson static 11mm and I think I'll be training with that. It's pretty darn static and it's kernmantle cover is super tough and nice with ascenders.

Our comps have platinum (which replaced their globe), but I don't have a long piece of it to practice on.

I like Samson static. I used it with my rope runner and had some success.
I just walked into Pinnacle Arborist Supply to use the back room to climb because it was raining and mentioned I could use a stiffer rope. He just got them.

I've got everything out. I'll snap one.
I've reverted to my two hands, one foot ascent. My time will hopefully be a little better than last time (18 seconds) with all 8 setup, changeover, backup points.

That's seriously fast, awesome.

I'm volunteering at Nationals next week. I will let you know what sort of systems there are. Hopefully, I can take a count.

I see some guys like to use it as a back up for their hand ascender or as a chest ascender. I don't use it either so ill sell it cheao

All that goofing off.... This comp has decided not to run the official format. Only ascent time will be scored. It's not a chapter comp, just a state one, but they usually stick with the standard rules.
I need to smooth out my ropewalking.

I kinda wish they would scrap the bolone structure and go solely with the ascent time. For years my fat as could never break 19 on foot lock , now I can use my full potential on single line and it’s dictated by how fast you can connect and disconnect...... that’s a bummer for me, all 216 pounds of bummer, and to be ruled by one device......

Was a setup volunteer and tree tech for our South Island TCC on the weekend. The systems were all Tazs except for 3 (tied RWs, not trying to be fast). I missed one group of 5 climbers so there many have been something else in there.

I think there were only 4 or 5 Tazs total. Mostly people borrowed. Gets you 20-27 second setup time with little effort.
