smaller zig zag

I believe they are not, they were replaced with the current model. You might be able to find someone who has one to sell you though. There’s a couple guys here who seem to have at least three of every device ever designed.

Are there some of the early versions to stay away from? (Crack potential or something?)

Not needing the info myself but someone searching for one may. Thanks.

I have several in like-new condition. If you can't locate one, send me a PM and I'll hook ya' up with one.
If anyone is gonna purchase anything from Mr. Gu I would strongly suggest putting on some HAZMAT gloves before you wipe the item down with copious amounts of bleach and rubbing alcohol. A night in the woodburner certainly couldn't hurt either... I'm pretty sure Mr. Gu has H.A.G.S, which as we alll know is a real mutherfucker to get rid of.....

Some of the Version 2 ones had the cracking top link problem... but not all of them. It was during a period when they changed the specs for hardening. I have one Version 2 unit that I bought new, that has never developed the fractures.

Best to stick with the Version 3 units. They're very easy to tell apart from the Version 2 ones.

The new version has the swivel if you get the “plus” version. Not sure how it compares size wise to old one.

I do have the fixed hole version and definitely find it a little big.

I bought a 2019 version and exchanged it for the earlier version when I saw how large it was. Disappointed they are not making the smaller one any more. All the zigzags I have owned started to creep after 1 season of hard use. I then tried using larger diameter rope but significantly reduced self tending. I guess I will just have to get used to the new model. I really like the zigzag with swivel and zigzag chicane combo though.

I am in the habit of putting several of my fingers between the chain links when I grip the zigzag. With that grip I can depress the top lever and still not drop in doing so until I put downward force on the chain links. This also allows for a smooth feathered control in decent and limb walking that feels similar to a knot. The larger wheel will make that grip awkward. The smaller wheel worked fine. I don't need the extra bulk that comes with a third hole for a chest harness connection or second tie in point either. I appreciate improvement and innovation. However, I think the previous model should still be made for climbers like me who prefer it.

...allows for a smooth feathered control...

I do that, too. I also prefer the V3 ZigZags. I got one of the V4 units, but turned around and sold it about three weeks later.

...working on something...

That dual-lever BOLA thingy? That really peaked my interest in your devices. The first thing I thought was, that thing looks like it might be like the ZigZag... smoother control. Also, I happen to be fond of stainless steel. PM me if you get a production version of that worked out... I need advance notice of how much money I need to scrape up without my wife catching on.

No fowl involved.

I have a double teardrop on order, which I will move to the very bottom of the spine which will simplify the device and help with the release also , and an aluminum bone style link on order that will connect the top arm to the bottom two.
