Single Rope Technique

Ok, new to this site, used to be on another, but too many nit pickers claiming to want to help, but don't. So having said that, lets hope theres advice here. I havn't tried SRT yet because frankly I don't get it. How to set it up and climb on it. I can tie the VT and slack tending pulley, but havn't found a good video or step by step explaination on it. are you really on a single rope or no? I see pics/vids that say srt, but they have one end of the rope attached to one side of harness, and then a split tail or prussik cord to other side of rope. any place to get a nice clear view of the set up and climbing on it. All I hear is how easy and fast it is to climb SRT. I recently purchased 2 petzl hand asscenders and a cmi foot ascender as well. thanks for whatever you folks can offer.

Raven...you should have been at Expo. This morning I taught a one hour classroom session and a one hour demo session on exclusively SRT.

Kevin Bingham had time to demo the Rope Wrench too.

If you're curious about SRT start by going to the Articles section here and reading the article that I wrote on SRT.

Then, take the time to go back through the archives and read all of the SRT threads. There is soooooooo much incredible information there. It's very unlikely that basic info is going to be rehashed again and again. You need to do your own homework. Then, when there is some specific thing that you can't figure out, run out a new question and you'll get a solid answer quickly.

Raven, You have come to the right place! Man I wish I could have made the expo!!!! I always miss out on the good stuff.

treestyler, thanks for link, looks good. I miss expo type stuff because NOTHING is ever near me that I know of. I'm in western Ma, near NY border. Don't know if theres any buzzers near me to show me stuff/ work with. It would be great though. I've been debating going to Daytona for a day or to for the rigging day class by Vermeer in december, airfare is expensive though.

Raven,

Moss is a regular poster here and lives in Boston. Get hold of him to see about getting together.

I'm in the far eastern side of the state but get out to western Mass. once in a while to climb. I'd be glad to show up if some climbers want to schedule an SRT skill share/get together for western Mass.

Here's a quick overview of basic SRT concepts:

Single Rope Technique (SRT)

Ground or limb anchor of single rope

Ground anchor is installing the rope over single or multiple limbs, rope is securely anchored at the base of same tree or different tree, whichever works best. Climber load on rope is doubled on the supporting limb or limbs.

Limb anchor is cinching Running Bowline (or screwlink or other hardware capturing the rope) to a limb. Load on the rope is not doubled. It's wise to put a control line or pulldown on the bowline going up to make the cinch.

Many different devices and methods to ascend and descend single rope. Common techniques are:

Texas System - 2 handled ascenders, footloops on lower ascender

RADs or Yo-Yo (1 handled ascender/footloop and Grigri or similar device)

Tree Frog - 1 handled ascender/footloop and another ascender (usually a Croll or similar ascender) attached at the waist and held up with a bungee or strap/chest harness

Mitchell System - (not easy to explain in a short sentence), uses a chest roller to hold the climber upright, good for climbers with more weight above their waist.

Do some searches on these different systems to learn more about the details.

Many of these require switchover to a descent device (F8, Grigri etc.) Before you go up on any SRT system practice switchover to descent before climbing high.

There's much more technique and gear not mentioned, ask questions and people will answer. Texas System is clean and simple, good to start on to understand basic SRT concepts. Most climbers move on from there to find and/or customize a system that works best for their physique, climbing style and target trees.

Tom knows his stuff when it comes to SRT. One of the highlights for me at the Expo, when getting to climb and help Tom with his SRT Demo. See the Attached pic.

I'm in New Salem MA half way between NY and Boston... northern tip of the quabin resivoir. I would be happy to host a rec climb to make it easy driving for everyone....

any takers?

o man! that was you? sorry I missed the chance to talk. it was real cool meeting a lot of the different buzzers I have known for years only from their avatar.

I've got Saturday Dec. 4 open, I'm in if that can work. I'll demo everything I've got SRT-wise. I'll try to have a Treebing rope wrench built by then :-)

I'm a go for DEC 4th... anyone/everyone welcome spread the news... I am trying to get permission to do rec climbs at a morgan memorial camp in S. Athol MA (just a mile from where I live in New Salem). Has a few very nice trees that would be perfect for the occassion.

I have limited access to a computer most of the time, could we corrdinate by phone? I'll send my # in PM...thanks moss.

I will post directions as soon as I get the clear to climb at the camp, if not I have back up plans.

if there are only a couple of climbers we can do it at my house. all white pines though.

Thanks for hosting, white pine is just fine, if we can get a 50-60 ft. or so high tie-in that should be enough for climbers to demo what they got or try out different SRT systems.

treebing, no worries. I actually made up a little badge with my Avatar that said Chris Girard - TreeBuzz Member. Wore it around my neck with my Expo badge. Met some new people and members that way too.

That Dec. climb sure sounds like fun Moss. Wish that I could be there.

I'm a go for the 4th, just send me detils, and address.

What do I bring? I may not have everything necessary, but suspect I do.

[/ QUOTE ]

Whatever you usually climb with plus your two handled ascenders, I'll have enough stuff so you can try different SRT configurations.
