should a ground guy wear

Thanks Jeff. What it comes down to Tim is trying to save a few minutes, even as much as an hour (time = money) by risking it instead of taking the extra time to address the thing that is causing concern. Whether it was ratchet strapping, or whipping the whole trunk to secure against the defect, bore cutting as suggest by Classic or any of the other options that ran thru Jeff's mind it all comes down to prioritizing. In this case, he prioritized production over safety. Well we know how that worked out, $500 for a used replacement or %1K for the new 461. Compare that to the cost of that hour supposedly saved....
Hmmmmmm......

@treehumper, Thanks for that. Not to be too tough on Jeff, hindsight being 20/20 and all of that. I sincerely appreciate the fact that he was willing to put himself out there in front by discussing this incident in the forum. Such discussions can save lives, so I would not wish to try to embarrass anyone who has the courage to come forward and discuss the incidents that do not go as one hoped they would.

I would like other folks to be willing to come forward and discuss such things in the future, so it's of benefit to be respectful of the members who choose to discuss such incidents in the here and now.

Another question based on your previous post as regards "whipping" the stem. Interesting idea, and one I've not heard of until now. I assume this whipping is just like the whipping one would do to the end of a rope, only using some kind of scrap pieces of 1/2" rigging rope for the length of the split in the stem in order to bind the stem together more tightly.

It would seem to me that ratchet straps would be quicker to implement, but that whipping would work in a pinch when the ratchet straps are not available.

Thanks for this tip. Interesting stuff.

Tim

It is, I used in when I first started in the business and we didn't have straps readily available.

My intent was to elaborate on what Jeff said and hone in on the underlying mindset that led to the incident, much alike to my own.
