Sharpening hand prunning saws

I am just wondering if anyone sharpens their hand operated prunning saws. I have been looking for a file to sharpen one of these handsaws and the file is pretty expensive ( around $30).

So does anyone sharpen with a dremel tool cutting disc or something besides the file?

Thanks, I used a triangle file for some touch up but a diamond shape file is needed for continued sharpening unless something like a dremel disc can be used.

I have only tried to sharpen a small cheap saw blade. If I had an expensive saw blade, I would only use the recommended type file.

Is it possible to sharpen an older Zubat or Tsurugi then? Or is it such a PIA that one should get a new blade?

Zubats are impulse hardened and can't be sharpened. Honestly, unless you really get into painstaking stuff like filing three angles on each tooth on both sides of the saw.......new blades are cheap. I figure I'll do me, and let Silky do Silky.

Thanks for the replies. Once I saw that it was called a feather file, I was able to find a small one for about $9. I ordered it and now I can see if I can sharpen my old saws.

Got a link to that file?

I love to sharpen things.

I sharpen Sugoi saws with a Silky feather file. You can find feather files at wood working supply stores too.

I have sharpened Tsurugi blades with a dremmel and small sanding disk. It chewed through the disks. I picked up some really thin diamond disks but haven't tried them yet.... I suspect they will work well for the impulse hardened blades. I picked up 3 new Tsurugi blades from Amazon for $15 so not real motivated to try yet.

TreeCo, I just searched on ebay for a feather file and it pulled up 20 or so sources. I picked one of the small files because my saws are not great and I just wanted to see if I could get them sharp.

You will find quite a selection of feather files and probably find what you are looking for.

Even $15 each would be a great deal. Is that total cost?

Oh...sorry. It was $15 each (actually $16.04 - just went back to look up the order, but what's a dollar). Then I went to copy the link to post (to brag or let others in on the deal....you decide), and they were back up to $43 that quickly. Now they are $51.89. Sounds like the old one is worth trying to sharpen again!

Depends on the saw you are using...you wouldn't want to flatten the teeth like he did at the start on most saws I have seen.

Nor would my knees allow me to sit like that and stand again.

Put it in a vice! (but Japanese have a long....make that LONG!....history of woodworking on the ground using their body to hold pieces in place.
