Root Collar Excavation

Yeah thats what i have been selling on older trees. Ive seen enough that are living through it that i only note it amd recommend bare minimum pruning. But it seems every damn young tree i see has them even to the point the builder or landscaper didnt remove the twine around the stem. Im getting blue in theface and sore in the hand telling people they need several hundred dollars in root pruning mulch and water and no one believes me. If no one minds id like to pirate some photos from this thread to create a flyer at least to show people? Im in the unique position where im the most knowledgeable and least in need of a paycheck in the company. so i am literally in it for the trees..just i wish i had a mentor for root pruning

For you guys doing root prunes, how long do you leave the roots covered with aggregates or river stones or whatever before you replace with soil and mulch again?

Lost on that one... Seeing what looks like many circling roots grafted to eachother, and possible root/trunk grafts.. Perhaps just plant a replacement near by, and hope for the best while planning for the worst?

Yeah the canopy looks great. It's at a point where the girdling roots are so large I'm not sure if removing them would be a good choice. Sure there are a handfull of smaller ones to be removed but what about the massive ones?

Do roots graft to trunks?
yes but rarely. Typically in grafting the flow has to be in the same direction. Compressed bark inhibits grafting. Of course there are no absolutes, so often it is stated as they will not graft. If you look closely in TC262's photo, you can see many root grafts, even a few on that big hunker right in the middle. However it's doubtful that major one is grafted onto the flare tissue.

I need you to ask directly if you want to use my photo's for promotion. I likely wouldn't mind but I do want them credited to me.

Yes, go after the smaller ones; too late for the massive sgr. re when to put dirt or mulch on the flare, NEVER!
My question was not as clear as it should have been. If roots were pruned 4 or 5 inches out from the flare as they were girdling a buttress root would you cover those with aggregates etc. and if so when would you cover with soil?

If the collar is well below finished grade you can backfill with a coarse breathable material. I've decorated that with dark pretty river stone too

You carve away the intersect leaving a gap. Use chainsaw. may have do it again in a few yrs. providing enough room for flow is all.

I'd tend to cover any wound with aggregate vs. soil, but if they are small (<1-2"?) I would not worry so much about infection.

Thanks that was exactly the information I needed. They were definitely small as they were only 12 year old trees. Mostly preventative work.

This is Doodie Head.

Everyone now tell Poop, Caca, and Doodie Head to go to Hell. Lots of sod to remove, adventitious, and girdling roots. Put some after pics up later.
