Rocky Mountain Chapter

Luke Glines won our chapter on Saturday in Boulder With O Gassaway a close second(O done Durango proud). A few words about the comp: Once again great job by all the organizers and volunteers and judges. It was a great venue. It's too bad the Masters couldn't have been in the Red Oak that the footlock and Belayed speed climb were in. I am sure it probably had alot to do with the busy nature of the sidewalk right underneath. Exemplery(sp?) sportsmanship by all participants. I am sure that everbody that was there- competitors and non competitors alike came away with something. Good to see Fred and Stumper from the Buzz. I am proud to be associated with such a great bunch of people that are serious about this thing and made it fun for everyone. I think alot of guys that hadn't competed before left totally psyched and pumped about next year. This comp is the glue that bonds us as tree people. I can't remember all the names but Thanks to every one that made it a success. No female participants- that was a shame but maybe next year. We have a couple of great parks here in D-town that would be awesome venues. Maybe 09 in Durango- Anyone?

Tom , It was good to meet you. Fred told me that C Springs is slated for next years comp. Canon City also has some great parks and trees but I suspect the competition will probably keep rotating between the big urban areas to keep it close to home for the bulk of the participants. I posted some pics in a thread on the wrong forum-Hopefully Mark or Tom can move it over here.

It was good to see you two at the comp again. Skew,it's great to see you show up annually and do your old school thing with class and style.

Luke won for the 3'rd time, and he was very proficient and pollished.

Here's a pic of Stumpy and O ("Maestro", on the Buzz), at gear check.

The speed climbs tree was the number 2 Shumard Oak (I would have said Red, too) in the state. Here's a shot, pre-comp, of all our lines coming out when we were setting it up. It was fun to have both speed climbs in the same tree; that tree was almost big enough to do the whole comp in!

Here is Fred up that big Shumard Oak setting up the speed climbs.

BTW. Re. Skew's "Old School" performance. Only one competitor scored higher in the throwline. Skew's high tech technique? He banged a monkey's fist through one of the low crotches and flipped it down for a score then throwlined a middle crotch and set his second line(He did cut things a mite close, finishing with one tenth of a second remaining). Treeguys being tree guys many of them hadn't read the rules. "You can do that? Just throw your rope?" Yep.

Thanks for the compliment Fred- old school yes, fast, well.... I need to work on the technical scoring aspects of the comp. A couple of additional notes: Matt Mayo's Masters climb was a thing of beauty. Also Mark James at 54 outshining many of the young bucks= badass. I want to be like Mark when I grow up! I also officially invite whoevr wants to be on the blue ribbon fact finding committee for Durango 09 climbing comp to get in touch and plan a trip. I agree Stumper with the proximity to the Metro area but I was thinking it might be more like a fun family weekend down here where people could do some fishing, biking , hiking, that type of thing. Maybe even get some special guest envoys from east coast or some such.
Still buzzing from all the good vibes.

I think I will get another digital camera and try to post up some pics of the two parks I have in mind. Some nice Am. Elms, Ash and Maples. Colors are going off right now.
