Ok, only my second week at Davey and Im KILLEN it. I thought being a big corporate monster they would have rules about letting new workers do certain things but nope, second day they had me jump in the bucket to see if I really knew my shit, slayed it. And today, my second week, my foreman asked if I would like to try doing a small climb. Doing anything new is terrifying for me but I pushed the fear back, smiled and said “Hell yeah” and up I went.

Ive jumped on every opportunity to be useful, show them that Im here to learn and progress and its definitely paying off :)07B88C1A-C3F9-4E5B-8A6E-2867027428C6.jpeg
 
:LOL: Well that might take a bit, me getting good enough for competition I mean (or maybe both?). I got up there and did the thing but it was far from graceful. After watching my co-workers fly around up there I was not prepared for how tricky moving around would be lol How does the competitive thing go anyways? Is it a speed thing?

Really don’t mean to sound like a ass. Pretty much around here all you gotta do is show up and you place at the local comps
 
I'm not interested in competition climbing, but I think the basic idea is to show your skills in being able to move safely and quickly from one spot to another in the tree. The organizers will have someone climb up and mark the spots you need to get to, and you need to figure out how to reach all of them.
 
The typical preliminary events are: throwline (hit target forks for points)
Ascent (speed up rope)
Work climb (ring bells in the tree)
Aerial rescue (get a dummy victim out of the tree)
WC and AR you collect points for verbal calls and stuff like pointing out there are no electrical hazards.
Noobs are treated really well, every one is friendly supportive and you get to brush elbows with some top dogs. So worth it for newish arb people.

Decided to hijack boombitches thread--today was my first day at a primarily tree care company. I've been doing removals and storm cleanup on my own for about the past 18 months and moonlighting as the climber for a 2nd crew for my buddies company doing removals a few days a week but I finally decided to step up, leave my "fall back" day job and get on with a local company who concentrates on trimming / care over removals. Very different atmosphere then I'm use too but all the guys seem cool, all old school climbers, all on Ddrt, even saw one guy working on a Blake's hitch! They were pretty amazed when I setup SRT and walked up the rope. Had 'em dying right at first when they noticed me run my canopy cinch up to the top and the one guy came over to check out what was up and I said "oh shit I didn't mean to do that, how do I get it back down".

Today was trial by fire, first they had me drive the chip truck (towing the chipper) and then I was assigned to the largest tree on today's property, an 80-90' Ash with 2 dead tops and some general thinning. Nailed it.
 
Good move on the canopy tie comment. Just watch that they dont always make you do the biggest trees on the work order.

Haven't heard from BoomB in a while. Wonder how she is making it.
 
Yea I agree but it depends who you are too. I personally would rather be climbing than on the ground.
We are a 3 man crew and since I've shaken off the rust, they seem to keep me up there untill it's something really sketchy or really close to wires(bc I'm not certified to work by them yet) or we don't have much time bc the other 2 guys have way more experience so their faster or if it's on the road and we need a flagger...
When I climb, my time flys and I just feel so much better after. Especially if it's something I'm not good at or just very intimidating, it feels so good to complete something that looked very hard from the ground. Idk how to explain it but I love it.
 
I bet that feels pretty good, to show up at a new job and crush. Trial by fire doesn't sound like the best hiring practice tho...unless its closely supervised like varsity try-outs.

That's at least a yellow light to me; declining Ash, Midwest. Head on a swivel for sure, these trees are true possums. I'm done climbing ash without lines in other trees, even ones that have been treated. Rapping off most ash crane picks. Signs of EAB in this one you climbed? Glad you stomped it though!

Working on a dialed, experienced crew is the jam, tons of fun and the only team sport I ever liked. Pumped for ya!

And I hope BoomBitch222 is steadily feeling more graceful up there!
