Question for MN arbs

I've been asked to remove a couple of pin oaks for a friend while I'm visiting the Twin Cities this summer.

Last I heard, summer oak pruning is not advised because oak wilt, but how about removals?

There are several oaks in the vicinity. I do not want to contribute to the decline of nearby trees.

Best to avoid oaks altogether. The removal of a diseased oak should not be carried out during high risk period until after the neighboring oaks are treated, and even then, wait until low- or no-risk period.

The removal of a non-diseased oak can expose neighboring oaks if the stump is left and infected beetles feed there. Also, neighboring oaks may be damaged during the removal process.

Here's a link to some info. Oak wilt status in Minnesota

Hey, when you're in town, contact me and we can climb some trees and grab a few beers!

I agree with Taylor and Casey - One thing I would add though, where are these trees in relation to the other Oaks? Whats the plan for the stumps? I agree waiting is the best option, but if you are sure you WILL NOT damage the other Oaks and you remove the stump and wood from the site AND it has to be done you should be ok.

Where does your friend live? There are areas in the Cities that are hot zones for oak wilt and others where it is extremely rare. This is a consideration.

YOu could contact the city forester where the tree is located and ask about how much oak wilt is around and their opinion on risk.

If it is too risky to do the removal when you're there you could hand off the job to one of many competent arbos in the area. You and your friend can be comfortable knowing that they will get a good job done.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll be in town early June....beers and a climb sounds good!

Is the new Surly brewery open yet?
