Prussik cord purchasing

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

I just bought the tenex and thought it felt a little bulky. I've been having trouble finding a prusik in the 8mm size. Any thoughts on were to pick up a good one?

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

Phil,
Try New England Sta Set, available at most sailing supply outlets. On the internet you can try:

http://mauriprosailing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MPS&Category_Code=LINES

or

http://www.sailnet.com/store/departments.cfm?id=1270

It comes in a variety of sizes and colors and does a good job at a fairly good price. You will have to cut and tie your own cords when you order line by the foot, but I prefer the flexibility I have this way. It is also far more cost effective. Figure about 5' of uncut line for each eye and eye prusik.

Jason, the 30" eye and eye prusik cord from Sherrill should be long enough to tie a VT.

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

I've been using Ultra Tech for tha last couple years. I'll be switching when my current stock runs out to a Technora product without a sheath. Ultra Tech will take a couple of good burn outs but as soon as the polyester sheath is comprimised the friction hitch begins to act inconsistantly. Working with any Technora product requires a VERY sharp knife, heat is useless.

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

I spliced an eye to eye split tail from Tech 12 from Samson and it worked great, it grips very good and is easy to control furthermore I don´t have to keep an eye on it to be sure it grips when I let go. This is the best cord I´ve tried so far. I´m going to splice a loop too to see how it works with a prussik.

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

I've been climbing on HRC prusik cord for two weeks now, and it is the best cord
I have used so far. It grips the rope great, and it is holding up very good. I know its only been two weeks, but I don't baby it at all. There is know burning or glazing.

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

What about Samson XLS 3/8" I have been told it is nearly the same as sta set. Does anyone have info on this or tried the samson?

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

XLS is very similar to sta-set, an all polyester double-braid. I used it for a little while. The XLS has a looser weave and is more prone to puffing/core-herniation than the sta-set.

There are some versions of XLS, like Norm mentioned, (ie- XLS Extra) with a dyneema core, and I second what Norm said about dyneema. It IS strong stuff, but brute strength is not the only thing to consider.

Re: Prusik cord purchasing

Thanks Nick for your response. You confirmed what I thought as I looked at the XLS. It did feel a little loose compared to the sta set. I don't think it would be a bad cord, but I do not think it would last as long.I don't think the samson guys would like to hear that, but I bet they never had thought that a bunch of arbos would be buying up there marine ropes.
