pics from my job this week.

Frist - Great photos

Next - i thought this was find the 5 things that were wrong photos.

I got -

Helmet
biner not a pulley.
low shoes
eye protection

are the Jean and short sleeves the fifth.

Thanks for making us all think about what we do when we climb and that Saftey first should be the moto.

NOW go get a helmet and leave the pro tech for the neighbors kid with the skate board.

jz - scary at times

Those were cool pics.
I am on of the most pro safety guys out there and gosh darnit no one is perfect.
That being said don't post pics of yourself without the most basic gear.
Helmets.eye protection, chaps and hearing protection are basic stuff.
Be safe!

oh it's fine. btw the carabiner/quick link you see in tree pic was not used for climbing that was where i hung my rigging line to keep it out of the way when i wasn't using the rigging line. as for my situation i can do what ever the heck i want. weather i wanna wear glasses or not they are not your eyes they are mine. although it may not be the safest thing to do it is minimal compared to something like not having a helmet. if you read the what i said in an earlier post. my groundie ran over my old helmet and destroyed it. this is all i had.

Nice clear pics Josh.
Love the enthusiasm of a noob, keep it up!

Remember your glasses.
I agree the skate helmet is better than no helmet. And when the real hazard to a climber is a swing back into something it offers better protection than most "climbing" helmets.

I'm with X on the low shoes.

And Jesse, there are heaps of rough-barked species of Euc, probably more than there are smooth.

I do hope to get to Hawaii some day soon.....

Long sleeves and gloves, even on a hot day are a must for me.

That might be because you are a sissy.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful, just trying to help you solve why you do such things. I'm being helpful; you see?

Good attitude Joshua! There are subtle things that need to be learned from working under a professional climber for a while. Jumping right into climbing can have its drawbacks, but it is hard to resist.

Joshua, you can do whatever you want, but you do set the tone for safety on your crew. Are they required to wear eye pro?
You can continue to post pics without PPE, but you will get called out here, for better and for worse. Just go into it knowing it. You don't have to respond to being called out on it at all, or in the way you did, or you can do so again. People just want you to be safe. That's what part of the critique process provides, feedback for growth.

Why wear glasses when you can squint all day? That's what I asked my employee Ben the other day when we helped another tree service in town. Aaron, a former production faller, was able to keep one hand cutting on his 460, while at the same time trying to pick the crap out of his eye. Eyes heal from corneal abrasions really quickly anyhow, and binocular fusion/ depth perception is overrated.

While not approved for use, I will bet that helmet gives better protection for climbers than approved ones.

Footwear a challenging and gray situation. I know that my Labonville kevlar-lined, steel-toed boots are more protective of my feet, but I know that my hiking shoes are more protective of my back while doing ground work. I feel like my shoes are better for climbing, and easier on thin barked trees for pruning than the boots. Would an OSHA inspection go for the shoes? Maybe not. My employees wear boots.

Hello all.

joshuastree - This is what I like to wear when I'm bucking trees and splitting firewood. It offers plenty of protection but does get a little warm in summer.

Since I'm still new to climbing, I'm not sure how practical it will be for that aspect of tree work. May need to go with a larger climbing line.

How about turning the camera outward and snapping a pic of Hawaii for us.

[/ QUOTE ] i was actually waiting for one of you to ask. i take a buncha non work related pics of the island and post em up in the tree free zone.

Keep that eye protection on, man. Even if you don't think you like it. Recently had a run in with Osha. Our ground work was cited for a lack of eye protection. It was a VERY expensive citation. I'm very fortunate I didn't have to pay it myself. I wouldn't have been able to. Plus your eyes are really very important. My glasses have saved a poke in the eye on countless occassions.

I'd really like to climb a Euc some day. They look like fun!

And you look like Michael Jackson from the shins down :)
I couldn't resist!

Skateboard helmets are designed to protect your head from a fall off a skateboard, climbing helmets are designed to protect your head from branches dropping from above as well as impact from struck byes and falls to some extent. It's important to use these helmets in the manner that they are designed. It's not the look or the brand name, they are different styles of helmets for different activities. Yes it's better than no helmet. Climbing helmets are expensive, but guys here will tell you, first things first, get yourself a good helmet and some glasses that you like, and get in the habit of putting them both on every job.

I haven't found the glasses yet.....

My kask visor has helped with the eye protection, if I wash the thing every freakin day.

I get hot, real hot, I try to work fast, no glasses stay clear on me.

It impairs my vision and makes things very dangerous when I'm not aware of everything around me due to my vision impaired. A few years ago, I almost made a fatal mistake due to fogged glasses since I didn't see something.

A guy speaking at our local arborist convention, said, "I tell my guys if they complain about glasses fogging up, leave them on, they fog up because the glasses are cool and your face is hot; once they heat up, they won't fog up".

Bull crap! I tried it many times since I heard him say that. I had thought I had just learned something.

Bull crap.

Many many pairs of glasses I have bought and tried over the years. None breathe enough to stay clear. Only my Kask.

I just saw the zip tie thing on another thread.

I will try that now.

I do think eye protection is very important and want to comply, I really do.

But, if wearing them makes me more unsafe, I'm not doing it.

Sure, on non humid days or less strenuous days, I am able to keep them on the whole time and it's great.
