Parallel or alternate bracing?

Hi folks, what are the advantages of these two bracing installation patterns? It seems, to me, that parallel bracing decreases damage to vascular cylinders but increases the likelihood of splitting the tree along a plane, and vice versa with alternate bracing. I can't locate info in ANSI or Google.

I'm noting the differences. I wonder why the 2013 ANSI is less rich in text. It only describes the patterns while the 2006 dictates when to use each pattern. Thanks for posting that, @southsoundtree

Now I'm noticing that that's not actually the ANSI, right? It's the bmp based on the 2006 ANSI?

There is a newer BMP than the one posted above, revised in 2013.
