Old school /new......

I think it's pretty interesting being someone who started climbing using "new skool" techniques.

I know I compare to skating alot, but I think it's really similar. For instance, I began skating new skool street only. Then I began skating more transition and ramps, blending old skool skating moves, alot more concrete skating, and now I think my whole style and love of skating is more rich due to it.

I think I've done the same with my tree work. I've tried to blend alot of old skool simplicity to my rigging and climbing, and I think it's made me a faster and better climber. Though, I can still dip into the bag of new skool that I've learned around. It's a pretty comfortable spot I think.

Example: you have many guitar players. ED Van Halen,Clapton,Stevie ray Vaughn,BB king,Hendrix, and on and on there are many considered great but no two sound alike ?! It is a matter of style. I have seen some great stuff that I love to watch, and I respect it's use but I may not use myself............. not my style! that's ok right?! THoughts

spiking and squirrels and monkey etc. , there is a big differnce with the climbing . That really started to change , I remember a thread in the old ISA forum where it was titled "sh*ttail climbing. Or back in 93 at ITCC Ken Palmer had this special tie in device a part of a parachute strap with two rings on each side ( got it in Europe. The Gibbs ascender for the safety line , Bob Weber had a New England line spliced by Danice that was external and was the scariest looking eye splice I ever saw. So I'm sticking with 93 as the year . Though secured footlocking was probally 89 -90 .

Jeff Beck and Jimmie Page got to be on that guitar list.

Look at the rack of guitars those guys bring on stage. Not only do they have different sounds/styles but they use a different guitar for a certain tonal quality for the song.

Same for us. So how big is your tool box? Mine is as big as I can afford.

So many great points made here. For me the OS method was just my ego "shining" thru as the harder I worked the better employee I was. Jealousy probably prevented me from seeing the benefits of intigrating the best of both worlds. Going new school, while retaining strong ties to my roots has enabled me to move forward in a positive way. The world changes and therefor I realized I must adapt or be left behind. Heck I was so stubborn it took about fifteen years to come to this conclusion.

I really like the way this thread is progressing!

I blend old and new styles when climbing all the time. My favorite activity is to "hucklebuck" up a tree, friction saver around my neck (watch out below!).

My favorite new school item is the hitchclimber pulley.

Phloem I am humbled by your compliment!! THanks Man!!
Riggs I would absolutely agree with your additions to that list!! There are also other genres not even listed there!!
The thing I think we all love and that keeps our ADD in check is the fact that this industry has so......much diversity of "stuff" from just pure climbing to science etc!!
I LOVE soaking it up!!

The only Gang Green I know of is the New Jersey Jets. And they will fail soon enough in their quest for the Lombardy Trophy.

I've been old school for 14 years and new school for about 1. I'm dabbling in all the new (to me) goods and techniques. It was a desire to be more efficient that led me to this so that is how I gauge everything I try. I don't care if it's old or new as long as it's efficient. I will be on the VT in a couple days so that'll be new and exciting.
