New rope, which one?

I'm climbing on a Ddrt system with a eye to eye and have been using 1\2 line for years. I'm thinking of getting either Bluemoon or poison ivy for a new rope what do u guys think of these ropes and what kind of split tail or accessory cord works well with them?

Poison Ivy is a great rope. The same as Bluemoon actually.

If you've been climbing on 1/2" lines, then the skinny lines may be a bit harder to grip, depending on if you wear gloves or not. The other setback is you really want to us a Friction Saver of some type on 24 strand climbing lines, like Bluemoon. Try to avoid natural crotching, as has been my experience with these ropes.

Other than those two things, they are both great ropes, and work very well with any mechanical devices you plan on using, like ascenders, descenders, etc. As for friction cord, they all work well with Bluemoon and other lines. I prefer Bee Line or Oceans Polyster.

You can't go wrong with either of those since, like Ranger said, they're the same basic rope. HRC, 8mm Beeline and Ocean Poly all give good results with a VT. Icetail is also good, especially if you get pine pitch all over your rope.

That's good advice about the friction saver too.

Once you have the rope you'll just have to try stuff out to see what combo works best for you.

It will be my first personal rope and I've heard good things about bluemoon from the city guys in my area. Thanks for the advise about friction savers I'll probably wait to use it I'm doing hydro right now so the throwball and acces. stay on the truck.

Tie your own eye to eyes or pre-spliced?

a spliced eye is so worthwhile for about 25 bucks. I currently tie termination knots. Won't ever buy a rope without a splice again. Large eyes in rigging ropes (useful for girth-hitching when rigging down a spar, etc), small eyes in climbing lines.

Why is milking a problem? I keep hearing that said like it's a fault but it's just part of breaking in the rope. The rope milks out, you cut off the excess and whip or tape the end.

I totally agree that Tachyon is nice rope too though.

Milking isn't a problem, but I've got a spliced eye in both ends of my Lava, so I'm flipping the rope every week or so for even wear. Can't splice both ends of PI because of milking. I got a free New England Ropes hat at a trade show once, and have been loyal since. It's the little things...

I'm back to 1/2 inch XTC fire abs blue streak for the sake of my hands.. I love velocity but my hands don't.

Ya, I'm staying with 1/2" climbing ropes. If a person always used mechanical ascenders, such as RADS or Rope Walker systems it wouldn't matter, so much. But I'm one to change it up more. Now if that pulley attached to the bottom hole of the ascender idea works out well for RADS, I'd pop the ascender back on more.

Thanks for reminding all about that aspect.

If this is true why does Sherrill offer PI with a splice on both ends?????

Chris

You can splice both ends of all the double braids, you just have to let the core and jacket balance (milk out) before you do the second one. You could do it before, but the rope wouldn't necessarily be at full strength because the core and jacket will stretch at slightly different rates.

My first PI rope milked about 2'. My next one didn't milk at all, the last one milked about a foot. Both of my Velocity ropes milked differently too, the last one only 4". I haven't owned a full tachyon rope but used 120' to make a couple of rope swings and some lanyards. The green stretched more than the orange... go figure.

Tachyon is tight, compared to Velocity or PI, the splice is a biotch because the jacket is so tightly packed. I'd rather splice used Velocity than new Tachyon.

I got a free NE Ropes hat too... in Hartford, it's kinda trashed now. The guy at TCI in Baltimore said he would send me a new one... I need to give him a reminder. HRC is my favorite hitch cord... although Ocean Poly is giving it serious competition. NE Super Braid (from Sherrill Tree) is my favorite bull rope for natural crotches, super tough stuff.

To back up for a sec, once you decide on a 7/16" (or thereabouts), 24 strand, double braid rope... your choices are all good, it gets down to what you like. Obviously it would be ideal to climb on all of'em but lacking that, you'll be able to use any of them once you get a good hitch tuned in. You can always try something different next time.

I use PI and have both ends spliced...I use hrc with the hitch climber...I have ocean poly but am currently using up my hrc which may take awhile...I love the PI and run it through a ring and ring friction saver

Must agree PI or blue moon are excellent choices Not too small but not the rubberband effect of 16 strand. I've got both and they are almost identical but I feel there are very slight differences between them. Yale told me they are identical however except color, could just be lot differences. I happen to like ice tail as a prusic although I've never tried HRC.

I could take a while indeed, I just retired one I'd been using as my primary for over a year... it was still fine, I just wanted to try out 8mm Ocean.
