I could take a while indeed, I just retired one I'd been using as my primary for over a year... it was still fine, I just wanted to try out 8mm Ocean.

whoa! 8mm. that's small. What climbing style/ application do you use with it?

How's it been?

Maybe small to you since you're on half inch ropes but 8mm is a pretty common hitch cord for 7/16" ropes, particulary with knots like the VT.

The only time I've used anything larger was when I was on a Blakes with a single eye split-tail... I take that back, I used the fat Tenex (yellow, single end per carrier) eye-eye from Sherrill with a Distel for a while.

For my size, rope, hitch and all the other factors, HRC has been the bee's knees as long as it's spliced to be 8mm (you can splice it to be thicker). Very responsive but grips easily. It gets too stiff when spliced thick and has to be manually set sometimes.

I just started using 8mm Ocean Poly after TCIA and I think I like it better. It sets every time without worry when using an XT (VT with a twisted braid). It doesn't flatten out or glaze easily... relatively expensive but considering how critical the hitch is, it's cheap.

Ranger, I'm using double fish knots too (I guess technically they would be scaffold hitches). John with Knot and Rope said it was a pain to splice so I took his word for it.

I know Bishop is selling it with stitched splices, pretty cheap too if my source is correct. John had an Ocean prussic at TCIA with double braid splices on both ends but it didn't sound worth it to me at the time. I may yet give it a try though.

I climb on Tachyon and Bluemoon. Both with a tight eye splice. Tachyon seems a little more durable to me but I prefer the feel of Bluemoon.

I've been using HRC with a VT on both.

How well does the Oceans Poly hold up to heat?

Pretty good so far but I haven't really smoked out of a tree on it. So far it's staying soft and round with just a little discoloration from the rope. I've been using it almost every day since TCIA. How about your's Adrian?

Mine is holding up fairly well. A little discoloration where one side has been used more than another. Still soft and round like Chip describes. I've been using it for 2 or 3 months now, but it doesn't see everyday use, since I don't climb everyday.

A poison ivy dark green was my favorite rope ever! I was heartbroken when I knicked it like a careless dummy. I got the lighter cvolored Hi-V and didnt find it as soft and supple in the hands as the darker colored one. I wonder if the dye makes a difference or if its just that the visual effect is harsher. I miss that rope as my main rope, but now I have two ropes for the smaller trees.

Kevin, I think dyes or how the machines are adjusted or something makes those two feel different. My experience was opposite, I really liked my Poison Hi-V especially after it fuzzed up a little. My dark PI is still really good but I don't like it as much as the high vis. They definitely milked out differently.
