Monkey Beaver harness

I don't mean to offend anyone, but i find the labels, and self promoting .com crap on the back off-putting. I know dozen and dozens of guys (myself included) who have been climbing and wrecking some of the biggest trees on the planet on the west coast for decades. We have been speed lining, blocking down big wood to itself, using cranes, ect. for years without feeling the need to video everything and post it on youtube. This is a way of life and a religion where I am from, and no latest and greatest saddle is gonna make you better. Years of experience and working with great treemen is what makes you better. In the end you are gonna be the same climber in a 35 year old buckingham as you are in a new Matt Cornell. Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest.

All of that is cool with me, but if you think that a 4D buttstrap saddle belongs anywhere but on a pole or in the dumpster, you're wrong, 35 years or week 1. Better gear makes a difference. Not in skill or experience, but it creates options, comfort, and safety as long as a good level head is involved.

Also, welcome! I'm looking forward to more strong opinions from a seasoned climber.

Not sarcasm there, btw.

Looking forward to this @August Hunicke
On the xyz how's it rate? Horizontal and being held tight in position
Leg straps? Bruised testis? Hip digs?
I spend most of time in a harness rather than on the spur. How's it doing in this respect?

I'd like to see this reviewed after actual work climbs mostly on rope, such as a large dead wooding job with a lot of motion and travel and another on hooks on a spar.
And maybe also from other women who do a lot of both those things.
I found the harness very comfortable when adjusted, but that's as far as I got with it in the time I had.
I also find the large decals on the leg straps a bit too much but that's cosmetic. I assume they would wear off.
I hope August shows how he uses those two back D's on the left hand side too.

I put it on and hung in it at Arbfest West, laid out flat, tipped upside down. Felt incredible to me. I'll put on a set of suspenders as I'm usually gear heavy when I climb. (Other modification will be removing those big patches with a seam ripper.) Couple of Transporters and I think I will love it. It's simple and clean compared to my Ergovation.

No pinching or pulling in the 15 minutes I was in it Thomas. The leg pads are purposely set up to be used in a fashion where they are held separate from the crotch region.

Going to get one for my wife too for some fun climbing together.

Leave this comment in your head next time please Tim.

Tim I'm going to bring this up again because I think it's important for guys to speak out about this. The world/society that we want doesn't work if we guys continue to inject comments like that (and worse) into it.

Now interestingly enough I enjoy and find a lot of value in almost all of your posts, and so, watch for them. I know this was a faux pas on your part.

Merle, I respect your opinion tremendously. Apologies to @roxy and anyone else I may have offended with my off the cuff, thoughtless comment. It was intended only as a quickly tossed off joke; a play on words. It was in poor taste. I will strive to be a better man in the future.

Tim

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm guessing this is not the way August wanted to introduce the product. This is a regular old tree guy trying to make a buck with the help of a rad company. If you don't like it, just don't buy it. If you don't like him, don't watch his videos. But at the end of the day don't forget that we are all just a bunch of tree nerds posting on an obscure forum.

I agree with the 4D buttstrap saddle comment. The good old floating D leg strap saddle has been around for a long time, and never stifled production, creativity or safety. I will admit that I climb in a Matt Cornell saddle and absolutely love it, but Im am still the same old climber. Thanks for the welcome!
Welcome to the forum, Eric. I also sport a MCRS and love it, although I'm still fine tuning it a little.
To everyone wondering about the twin d-rings on the left hip ..... I'm gonna guess they would be awesome for the speed line slings Hunicke uses with those snaps of his.

I checked out Samurai Joes monkey beaver saddle at arborfest and he was using those side d's to hang gear. Same as the rubber coated gear loops on most every saddle just a more positive attachment point. And like Merle, I tried the demo saddle and agree with everything he said. I want one but I'm having a hard time justifying it as I like my ergo just fine and it's still got a lot of life left in it. I guess in a situation like this where I'm faced with a difficult decision involving shiny new toys I will just ask myself: what would @Steve Connally do? And then buy it!
