Mini Skids

Yep that's my concern. 13,300 truck & 14,400 trailer puts me at 27,700 and CDL A in Pa. Best as I can figure at least. I also don't know that I need a 14ft long trailer. However it does allow me to load 7500 lbs of stuff plus the Avant. I'm just now starting my first DOT inspection so I am just having loads of fun sorting out and trying to comply lol.

You are doing fine. If my dumb a$$ can pass that DOT audit, you can. Lol. The heavy trailer works against you in several ways. Over 10k = class A CDL. Problem... kinda cause it's difficult to get the license without the equipment and someone to ride with you... sucks. Also with your gross combination over 26k you must enter into a random drug testing program... now I know you would have no issues passing on any given day.... but they could pull you on any given day... even if you are supposed to work your normal job. In my case they could pull me on a day I have a crane scheduled, and being small that could be very costly! And it's very random, in 18 years of having a CDL I have been pulled 3 times... all within a 6 week period.

You definitely want the 14 footer. It's nice when you can stack a few small logs in front and down one side and still squeeze in your avant and not have to make a return trip for it. You do want a 10k gross trailer to stay under cdl. Or unless your planning on getting a helper/ground guy to pull the avant and dump trailer and you drive the chip truck. You could ditch that little enclosed and replace it with a one ton work van. That would stay under cdl with a 14k trailer. I'm sure you've heard me rave about having a van on here. It's a very economical and efficient trailer puller for a small operation like yours is growing into.

I sent the dealer an email he will see Monday letting him know I need a 10k trailer, the 14k version he had in stock is not going to work well for me. If I can't get around the 14k version I will be looking to sell or trade it for a 10k trailer locally. I know it is worth more but 10k trailer makes my life so much easier.

Your capacity with a 10k dump will only be about 6,000-6,500lbs.

It will be easy to overload.

Just FYI.

I know but I still have 4,000lbs of truck bed I can use also. Being over 26,000 lbs is a huge burden as a part time guy. 99% of my jobs would be no problem with a 10k trailer. Come winter I am hoping to maybe do some snow work with also and just don't really need the extra k's and the legislation it comes with in my case.

I've come to believe Legislation is to keep the small man down.

I own a RE Enforcer, I can get technical if I really have to lol.
I'd see if you can get the exact trailer built with 5k axles instead of 7's and you can always change out to 7k's if you need to or ever bend one but your tag will still say 10k. Axles themselves are fairly inexpensive as long as the are 7k's or under. The prices on brake and axle parts go way up once you get into 10k and larger.

If they can't help you out let me know I've been looking to upgrade to a 7 x 14 x 14k(I have the class A). But I would want to look at the trailer to be sure it fits our operation. Won't promise, but it's worth a try.

They make that exact trailer, for just this reason. This one is in stock and has the adjustable height pintle option. What I would really like it this trailer just Titled, replated as 10k. I will take an over built 10k trailer.

Companies will re-title with different weight rating as I understand it as long as you haven't gotten a ticket on this unit at this rating yet.

That's what I am hoping. I just spoke to dealer and said the exact thing to them. Call the manufacturer and they should be able to do it and send you up a new sticker for the frame. It is still sitting at the dealer so no tickets yet lol.

Actually just called the manufacturer @Merle Nelson. They said not a problem at all for the dealer to ask for. Costs them like 10 bucks for processing. They said probably half of the trailers they make over 10k get de-rated to under 10k. People like the overkill build but don't want the CDL hassles if they don't need them.
