Mini Skids

Mike, the SK 750 that I demoed has a Kubota D1105-E 25HP engine, that is tier 4. They took out the turbo to make it tier 4 compliant....if it had turbo it would be 31HP like the SK 650. This option is available on the 750 in Europe....go figure! But, it still seems to have a ton of muscle. Jesco dealership in Mass is asking $24,500 for the machine, but the salesman is throwing in the bucket and forks for free. I just have to pay the full $2,500 for the BMG grapple. Everything else I have for equipment is well used, so I think it's time I bought a new piece of equipment.

They gave me a quote on the sk 850 too. $29,990. It has a 37 HP Yanmar engine, has a digital screen, and has to go into re-gen mode every so often to burn off the carbon. I would worry about glitches and screw ups with that fancy technology. The guy said the extra HP mostly helps if you're digging or trenching with it.

Try and find a really good used one. I would stay away from those Tier 4's until they get the kinks worked out.

I'm sure that those ditchwitches are nice, but I decided to try that new TX1000 by Toro. We will be picking it up this weekend, so we'll see how we like it.

Please let me know what you think if it. I am interested in that or the ditch witch. We currently have a toro 425, gas engine. Thing has been great for use, and we beat the crap out of it. I am mostly interested on your thoughts on the controls. As I know they have changed them from the model I have.

Toro is purposely staying at the 25 hp mark so they don't have to deal with emissions.

That sounds smart. 25 hp can move a lot.

I love DW, but any machine that has a "re-gen" mode.... no thanks. I know, not their fault, but still.

Our first mini was the Toro 425. Then I upgraded to a 525 with the 3 cylinder Kubota diesel. That is a much better machine, but after running it about 1000 hours, we were looking around for something bigger. We were trying to decide between either a bigger mini, or an Avant wheel machine. So we went to the GIE Expo in Louisville last fall and tried them out. The Avant was a nice loader, but then we saw the TX1000. Toro has addressed all the things we didn't like with the 525, and we love the ability to just step off of the machine to tend to the chipper, etc., that we wouldn't have had had we gotten a wheel loader.

It does say something for the TX1000 that when I ordered my machine they had a backlog of orders, and it was over 2 months before my dealer could get one for me.

So I am starting to look at mini's, key word "mini". Does anyone run the Toro 323 or similar? I want 4 wheels, gas and under 2,000 lbs. The wheels are only debatable if you are loading it with ramps into your chip truck sometimes as I will be also. I want gas because my truck and chipper are gas so I can carry 1 spare fuel. I want less than 2,000 lbs so I can store and transport it with my enclosed trailer when needed. Thanks.

Just curious why you are set on a tire machine? The tracks on my 25gt are really easy on lawns if that's the concern.

Top of the ramps 40+ inches in the air. Tires always have contact as they crest over. Not opposed to tracks just don't know how they handle the top. My guess is you have to speed them over the top so you get the weight onto the truck.

No. Slow.

I load at 41" and 44". You know when the tipping point is coming. I ride it, or get on/ off the platform and pull/ push down. Pivots right over.

Wheels might need smoother ramps????

I go into my chip box at 44" heavy- end downhill, due to the shape of the machine, the rock-over nature of tracks, and a ~4.5' chip box height ( 1" of clearance when the machine is flat). Two cans, no big deal.

I've been daydreaming about compact giant loaders and saw this recently: https://www.tobroco-giant.us/products/skid-steer-loaders/giant-sk-251-d/ not sure how available they are, but pretty compelling. Not a gasser, but looks like it hits all the other points. The ditch witch 650/750/755 is really nice as far as tracks go, but I think it's closer to 3k and also diesel. Beast of a machine though.
