MA REC CLIMB DEC. 4th

I will be hosting a rec climb on DEC 4th in NEW SALEM MA. MOSS has generously agreed to teach some SRT tech. More details to follow. Please post or PM if interested so i can get a head count.

If you're already climbing SRT bring it, looking at this as an SRT skill share and tune-up as well. Will work on having a Singing Tree Rope Wrench to try out. If you've never climbed SRT we'll go over rope setting options and various climbing systems.

Hesanarborist will PM you location/time details as they firm up.

Thinking of 10am meeting time so people have time to get there (central Mass. just north of Quabbin Res. off Rt. 2)

If anyone has a Unicender bring it along, I don't have one.

I'll go over:
Texas System
RADS
Tree Frog
Other hybrid setups (combo footlock, Pantin and ascender setups etc.)

Bring some slings, webbing and/or 8mm cord to make ascender tethers and footloops etc., I'll bring some extras of those materials as well.

Bring your regular climbing gear and rope set, the idea is to climb SRT with what you have as much as possible. I'll have extra handled ascenders to test.

I'll have 10mm Sterling HTP static rope (same as Snakebite) to try if you haven't climbed on it.

I'm In too. Just got 2 petzl hand ascenders, cmi right foot ascender, and hitch climber, tried some stuff out back today, getting there........

Found the tree we will be climbing yesterday, its about a 65' (maybe) Red oak with a nice wide canopy, some other white pines in the area if we want something taller as well.

The oak sounds perfect, white pines you mentioned are good to try some longer ascents, mess around with slingshots etc.

Thanks for doing the legwork to provide a place to climb!

Here's a short video from today. I don't like the helmet cam location,I have the Vertex Vent, have to mount it on top, so you can;t se everything I see. Maybe be able to move it forward so it's more on the downslope of the helmet?? I have a Drift X170

Can you side mount it on the helmet? Cam quality looks good.

Not if I want to add the visor, which I may or may not do. Down side is the audio, you can hear me ok, but anyone not close buy is in audible.

Hey Raven27,
Could you bring your helmet cam at the rec climb?,I have been looking at different cams and the Drift HD170 is one of my favorites so far,I just want to know if it is worth it to expend over $300.00 for it.

sure, planned to anyways, so we can throw some stuff up here afterwards. I really wish the audio was better. I did some filming today, and was talking through my process for removing a seriously rotted cherry and you can't hear anything I'm saying. I don't think I payed anywhere close to that. Mines not HD though.

I must have tree buzz dyslexia, its a Red Oak. I went and looked at it again and its not as tall as I originally thought (I was in a rush, my boy was getting cold). Still a good demo tree with a wide canopy and good TIPS but I think we will need to move on to something taller in the area just for the fun of it. (There are plenty of tall White Pines so have no fear).

I will have my hand held video cam as well, anyone good with video editing to make up soemthing cool to post here?

Any reasonably sturdy tree will do :-)

I'd be happy to do an edit on whatever video we capture, I'll bring my cam and tripod also.

Definitely bringing my backpacking stove to make coffee. If it works for the location, a campfire for warming up would be most excellent.

I believe a reasonably sized camp fire will be possible. There is also an abandoned camp building that is in good shape if we have to wait out any rain or harsh weather. (its a little creepy though, great place for a haunted house)
