Lubrication Conversation

I recently took a road trip to Virginia in my 6.7 ford diesel and when I filled up down that way my fuel mileage was increased by a pretty good amount, leading me to believe where I live the quality of the fuel is not as good. Is there any stand out addictives anyone treats their fuel to give it a boost in quality!?

Some of that may be related to being on the highway and also perhaps not putting fuel through the dpf to burn soot? I try to stay on the highway once in a while to let the exhaust clean out real good, but otherwise it’s rural roads with a load and/or a trailer on…not ideal conditions for a modern diesel.

Your definitely on to something
I try to do the same for the dpf
Do you treat your diesel fuel with any addictives Oceans?
I filled up in my yard from the tanks we always use for work truck said 315 miles to empty
Filled up at a fuel station in VA I believe and truck said like 360 miles to empty
Maybe I did not top her off on first fill but I thought so , I don’t usually ever see it that high and just said maybe the fuel is better and truck knows it lol
So this was an observation based on truck telling me lol

Try scrolling through your truck menu in the gauge cluster and go to the fuel economy section. That’s a good place to monitor the stats, but mileage in town vs. highway compounded by x? exhaust filter level is definitely apples to oranges. The range is probably based on most recent economy readings, so the better your economy is, the longer your range will be on the miles to empty display.

Also, I have my trucks serviced by a local mechanic. He’s an ace, and uses what’s appropriate for each power plant.

For on-road vehicles, I have two Powerstroke 6.7s, one CAT 3126, and one Isuzu I6HK.

The 6.7s get full synthetic, and the other 2 get Rotella 15-40. No additives in anything that I know of. I actually think going down to a 5-40 on the Rotella might help, and I’ll ask him about additives.

I met with a professor the other day that specialized in automotive lubricants. Here’s his advice when it comes to lubricants. “ buy the most inexpensive and change often”

I use that philosophy

I know there’s a lot going on with oils and lubricants for equipment ! I’ll start with this question. What heavy duty diesel engine oil are you happy with? I’ve recently learned it’s possible rotella has taken some additives out of their oil , the price has lessened along with quality? Anyone else here what I heard through grapevine in regards ?! Any other enhancements or changes in the world of oils, grease , what have you, people with equipment would want to know !?

I heard a fireman say find em hott n leave em wet so I think this is all related Jim thank you for joining the conversation! It’s a pleasure to hear from an ol buzzer

Related to this thread only by the word lubricant...you how WD-40 is not a lubricant? Well they have a product out that has "Teflon" in it by its more generic name. It works excellent and results in a dry lube.

I used it on a steel to aluminum fabrication hinge point on my chipper exhaust that was hard to move when hot. Pivots well now. Big hinge pins on my dumpster box doors - no more squeaking when opening and closing.

Only $7 a can as apposed to a Teflon product for crane and lift booms that is $60 a can. (Hold your breath when doing shorter burst applications.)

I buy that stuff by the case Merle! I use it exactly as you say and I love it as final applicant for keeping the wood chips from sticking to the crane and lift !

I buy 6 can cases of the WD40 w/PTFE too. Give a can to friends here and there as it's such a great product. So you use that product as a boom lubricant all together?

Great info Tom. I will get some for wherever I can use non aerosol. Thank you.
Yes that exact formula with ptfe . I spray it all over anything metal wipe clean and certain applications just spray on light Coating and leave as it drys itself and keeps our problem mostly wood chips and dirt from sticking to surfaces and collecting. My mek heads covered in it and crane and lift and chipper and stump grinder and Avant some places. It’s a great cleaner and keeps stuff clean and debris free equipment wise for sure
Ive only used one formula for my 7.3 and cat 3126 motor when I had them ,but new truck has a Cummins. I’m gonna try archoil in that as well. Do you know what formula you used? I guess they have a couple different numbers.

No. Just looked it up and ordered the other day. Haven't even added it yet. I have been replacing a Bandit disc chipper bearing I was able to damage with water - posting about that now.

I discovered that a basic concern is knowing what chemistry of grease is already in there and staying compatible with what you add. Quality wise the oil in the carrier can be dino or synthetic. Other major factor was moly content, high or low and IIRC don't use moly on splined shafts because the particulate builds up over time clogging the works.

Anyone else use the grease made from Gaddus flies?;)

long time resource BITOG Bob is the oil guy

Ptfe is a PFAS
A forever chemical that wreaks entire water tables contaminated.
Something I would steer way clear of, let alone chance coming into direct contact with

Yeah, but my eggs stick… Joke aside, there’s a whole area in central Maine that the State put a Do Not Eat flag on for deer and turkey due to high levels in the meat. Sludge farming, someone thought it was a good idea with the shit we eat/flush.
