Knot for hanging block off horizontals

What knot are people using to tie on a block (or eye sling, biner, pulley) when it's on a fully horizontal limb or stem? I generally use a cow hitch for vertical stems and haven't really settled on what to use for horizontal placings.

Heh...stillson hitch....tell me what that is, ya'll long facers.....

For small stuff, a girth hitched webbing sling, or basket hitched for more strength, if bigger-- loopie, or eye sling tied with the above knot.....

It depends on the task at hand. If it's gonna stay for a while, a loopie. If it's gonna be continually moved, a cow hitch.
Roger, stillson and cow are 1 and the same. I 1st learned of the stillson in the early 90's from 'Ron Danise'. Now that's a name from the past.

I use alot of 1" tube webbing when I climb.

I also cut much smaller branch chunks than most folks!

We do alot of end weight reduction.

I bring about 6-8 various size loops in the tree

I loop a 1" webbing sling/large pear carabiner/munter hitch, rig the sling cradle style for max horizontal strength, super quick too!

Or girth hitch on smaller stuff. I like a munter hitch to lower off when on a sketchy stance.

Anything bigger I use a piece of 1/2" arbor plex, cow hitch.

Same here, tie a cow almost always. Friend keeps trying to convert me to carabiner rigging (using a carabiner off a spliced eye instead of tying knots), I like tying knots.

Wouldnt tying the block to the spar still require and knot or hitch?

I would say a cow is a lot more secure than a clove...a clove w/o half-hitches is almost useless.

Cow's pretty fast. Clove isn't for a lengthwise pull.

I would always back up a clove hitch, of course.

Is the cow hitch so secure that you would not back it up?

KH,

What do mean a "lengthwise pull"?

To terminate a rigging line, if I don't use a running bowline (maybe w/ marl), I'll use a clove hitch (w/ two half hitches). I can definitely tie this faster than a cow. (Probably because knots are hard to tie with hooves)

Yes, the cow is that secure.

A lengthwise pull is a pull that is perpendicular to the wraps the rope takes around the anchor point. In other words, down the limb. If you tied a running bowline around a spar to pull it to fell....and if you hung on that rope at the base of the tree....that would be a lenghtwise pull.

Or something like that.
