Kentucky 2011

Uncle Norm,

Will you be allowing harnesses that have been modified from the manufacturers specs, ie the Liger? Each component of the harness will be rated and labelled or otherwise easily recognizable such as a section of Arbormaster BRW for a bridge element. This particular configuration is based upon current accepted configurations of other harnesses.

DQ him Norm! Half that guys stuff is sketchy at best.

For those coming to town that have any interest in hitting the skatepark early morning Sunday after the comp make sure you bring your boards/bikes/blades...Rumor has it that Whitelock (Team Rockout) is bringing his prototype Aluminum Skateboard !!

Probably will figure out a rec climb for later on Sunday as well !!

If a piece of equipment is ANSI Z133.1-2006 compliant, it should be allowed.
The question should be: will the Kentucky's Chapter insurance cover 'that' piece of equipment should it fail, since it is now altered from the way it was sold to the consumer?

My guess is that the insurance company would find a way to avoid any liability regardless of whether the piece of equipment was altered or not.....such has been my experience with the operators of the legal rackets known as insurance....

In this particular case nothing on the harness has been unstitched or altered in a way that would cause any weakness to the overall product. Any piece that has been removed has been replaced with a product that is much stronger than what was originally there...

Granted, the configuration of the harness is altogether different than the original...but the key elements that create strength in the original (ie waist attachment to bridge, attachment to leg loops) are present in the modified version in a near identical fashion.

I understand the reasoning behind not allowing "altered" products in sanctioned climbing comps and will certainly abide by any decision made concerning this harness without prejudice, but considering that we allow the use of many customized climbing systems as long as the independent pieces all meet spec I would think this could be applied to a harness as well ...

....if nothing else this discussion and clarification could help a future ITCC competitor...

Can't wait till the comp! Going to be awesome. Think I'll be rocking a mohawk in honor of the comp. We'll see

Sounds like your request falls in my lap, Hattier!

Regarding any modified or homemade equipment: the gear in question will be evaluated for "appropriate" configuration of the components by the Head Tech and the Assistant to the Chair (i.e. Norm and Stephan). A decision will be made for on each individual piece of equipment, based on an that evaluation of the components and configuration.

Personally, I think your Liger acceptable, but Stephan is being compensated well to think differently.

I'll check my rulebook tomorrow, but I can't imagine that Wells Fargo is too jazzed up about any of this stuff. Modified harnesses, homemade arborist multi-tools, Rope Wrenches, and so on.

Tree People,

The interest in the 2011 Kentucky Tree Climbing Championship has been phenomenal this year. Up until now I have hesitant to set a limit, but regretfully my Assistant and I have come to the decision that, to be fair to all of the climbers and volunteers involved, we must limit the number of competitors to 35.

As of right now I have waivers forms and checks from 22 climbers. I have a list of 50 potential climbers that have given me strong commitments that they are coming to climb.

There are 13 spots available to climb!

The first thirteen people that call me at 502-376-9637 and confirm their space, will climb. Please be 100% positive that you are going to be here for Friday’s meeting.

Sorry to have to do this, especially so late in the game, but it will make our event better overall.
