John Prine...can anyone not love him?!

Always liked John Prine. We do Paradise in some of our shows. We go to Mt. View a lot. He's up there quite a bit just walking around. Very interesting to talk to.

Several years ago, we were coming back from a weekend camping trip with the middle school outdoors club. We stopped at a country diner for burgers, and there was a guy on the back deck with a guitar playing. He asked for requests, so several people requested some songs most of which he didn't know. So I finally piped up and said "how about some John Prine". Some people looked at me like who the hell is John Prine. Anyway, the guy did an almost perfect rendition of "Paradise". Man, that was great!

Simply one of the greatest songwriters of his time. The man can do no wrong in my book!

My All Time Favorite John Prine.

Oohhh Man, Iris Dement’s voice.....

A close 2nd is Bonnie Raitt’s version of Angel from Montgomery, specifically the video where she’s playing that electric acoustic Jumbo Gibson In Holland.

She was also Smokin’ during this period.

I saw her at the MN State Fair a couple years ago. Richard Thompson opened. Then he joined her for her third set. Fantastic pairing!

Prine was playing in Philadelphia last April-May when I was there & I wanted to go so bad but scheduling prevented it: my hotel was literally across Broad Street from the High Class venue where he was performing.

Seems like the cheap seats were ~$330.

I had a friend tell me about John Prine once. Never listened much as it’s not generally the type of music I have leaned towards listening to as of the last 5 or 6 years. But l saw another friend’s father a month or 2 ago who is into singer songwriter stuff and I showed him a song by James Taylor and Mark Knopfler called sailing to Philadelphia. Just the other day he texted me back, told me he loved it and told me that he’s going to see John Prine in Nashville around new year’s. Anyways I gave him a fairer chance at a listen the other night for about 30 minutes and enjoyed it.
Spanish Pipe Dream was a good one.

John had to drop off the schedule at the New Orlean Jazz Festival last week because of health issues. I hope he's doing well.

My you tube mix this afternoon has been...JP...Neil YOung...Nanci Griffith...Neil Young...Bonnie Raitt... Joe Ely...Richard Thompson..many others. I'm realizing more and more I've been drawn to troubadors. singer songwriters who tell stories.

spanish Pipe Dream is a great gate-way song to JP.

My gateway was opened at gymnastics practice with Illegal smile...and his whole first album. Imagine my surprise when I found this! I worked side-horse too :)John Prine side horse.webp

Illegal smile was good too. I remember that song now that you mention it. I tried to keep in mind the my interpretation of the differences of the times (when it was written and now.) as Inwas listening to it. Not that there aren’t similarities but just a different generation dealing with a older generation who knew even less about it.

NO...John...I didn't have that move.

My coach would have an alumni meet the week before the regular season started. It gave the new team a fun way to get out the butterflies. And old teammates to see each other. Some alumni took it serious...others clowned a little. I opted to clown...3-4 years after graduation. 9-78 gym web.webp
