Introductions / level of experience

Took a walk in the woods to decide what my major would be, had it down to English, Forestry, or Pottery. Same stand of trees I grew up exploring and would still notice new things, enrolled in Forest Ecosystem Science. Competing in timbersports introduced me to arboriculture and been my trade since. So thanks to Psilocybe cubensis I’ve been raking, dragging, and climbing for over a decade. Don’t do drugs…

So far as getting experience goes I learned what to do and what NOT to do from employees and local companies I would hire to work with us when we had a job that was above our experience
So I will add in my position at work
Am I capable of climbing?
I would think almost everyone is capable?
I choose not too and have no desire to learn
I choose also not to operate my lifts nor my old bucket truck
I have ran one of my lifts and my old bucket when employees of the past didn’t show up in the past
No higher than corn
No lower than potatoes

So funny but I’m scared of heights but not a dumb ass

If I have ever insinuated that I climb let me clear this up right now
And I don’t have no problem with people who do or don’t

I don’t run the ropes very often neither but do when needed
I run a business
I run all machinery and trucks
I handle all the bids

so far as our Team goes I hire the best people for the right job
I like to think we are the Avengers my whole Team are super heroes in their positions

As I have mentioned before no shame in my game

If anyone has notices I may ask a question about a saddle or different climbing gear but never give any advice on any climbing gear

So we have a member asking others questions about me instead of being an adult and just asking me
Thought I would just clear this up

Briefly… 8 years ago I walked away from an espresso machine in Manhattan and joined a crew of tree people. Gradually got into climbing, was paralyzed by fear of heights that I have transformed into a respect of heights. Absorbed the magic of SRT from some dedicated experienced climbers in NYC. Moved to Asheville 5 years ago and have been full time climbing ever since. Crane work, large removals, fun prunes. ISA certified for 5 years, CTSP trained. Still getting schooled every day in tree knowledge by colleagues and friends. Still absorbing as much as I can from climbers in real life and here. Hope to be in a harness for another decade or so.

I find this interesting…. On the thread “New career awaits!!!” You commented this:
“I agree with what some of what you’re saying but insinuating that your life is threatened everyday is ridiculous
Either learn better practices or don’t bid on trees out of your league
Not trying to be a jerk but come on Sir.”

You don’t climb anything higher than corn…. you should not be remarking about the inherent dangers of rope access tree work, to the people that actually do it. The fact that you actually called someone out for speaking on the dangers kind of offends me, because it sounds like you are more or less a cubicle jockey ( dare I say LANDSCAPER?) born into a company in the outdoor/green industry.

Well sir I apologize to you if I offend you but I have flown my buckets and I have trained 5 people in the sky not only to operate a bucket to my high standards but also before training them in the air but to run a saw and ropes which I believe you need to know before running a bucket
And no I don’t climb and I don’t like being in a bucket
But you already know the guy in the sky has a different view from the guys on the ground

By the way I sub in some companies with climbers and they know me and my story and they all appreciate my opinion from the ground

Once again I would never give advice on saddles or any climbing gear
But would sound off on rigging and most practices of a removal
By the way I’ve only watched crane work also but find it amazing when done right

And my wife plants and sells trees we don’t do any landscaping or hardscape
We own 3 spades 32” - 48” -90”

Bucket work is comparable, but not the same as rope access. Yeah, that’s great you train your staff to run a saw before you send them up in a bucket…. That’s kinda how the progression works. Dude you straight up told another climber “Learn better practices, or don’t bid on trees out of your league”. Now your saying you don’t climb, you sub other companies
for their climbers….. maybe these guys “appreciate” your opinions only because they’re being polite to the guy hiring them…. everyone’s got opinions, especially a (expert who doesn’t climb but watched a lot of removals) like yourself.

My responsibilities day to are to take my crew out and get them home safely wile being able to provide for me my crew and their families also

that’s my pay grade

and yes not afraid to admit we sub other companies in
But just to let you know I haven’t sub out a company since getting a large spider lift

so I don’t work out of my pay grade

you do what you do out of a saddle

we do what we do out of a bucket

wtf

My Foreman is a climber I taught him nothing about flying or climbing
But he has taught me a technique or two and I be also shared some of my techniques with him also

And yes when I said and will continuing to say if you feel that your life is threatened you should not do what you are doing
If you fear for your life then your doing something WRONG
In a working atmosphere

NOBODY ever used the language “fear for their life”. You warped @AlanKekoa thoughtful/insightful remark. Page 2 of the Fundamentals of General Tree Work written by GF Beranek there is a disclaimer about the inherent dangers of tree work. You gonna warp Gerry Beranek’s words too? Tell Gerry he shouldve found a different occupation, or hire someone else? Stay in your Lane. Do you think the guy who died from a failed spider lift feared for his life before it failed? Doubt it.. How about the guy who survived, and is on the long road to recovery? Probably not. Shit happens in the blink of an eye, people get hurt, or die. That is the reality.

So does anyone disagree with me ?
If anyone doing pruning or removals feel that their life is threatened everyday at work should not learn better practices and only do work they feel comfortable with or should find a new career?
I guess that’s what all this fuss about

I never gave that member any other advice

Now your going from climbing to bucket work

You please stay on track

I’m on track here homie. You brought buckets and spider lifts into this discussion. I’m reminding you that working from those also has inherent dangers, but you yourself don’t work from them. You are 100% correct in the sentiment that if you “fear for your life” you should stop, seek training, or change occupations….. but nobody used the language “fear for your life” but you…. Watching work being performed vs. actually logging hundreds of hours physically doing it are two extremely different forms of experience. I could watch thousands of hours of open heart surgery, and have tons of “opinions” on it, but would they be valid or useful?

Do you own or run a spider lift ?
