Interesting Tree Photos

I used to live 5 minutes from that tree before I moved out to BC 2 years ago. I'll see if I can find the pics of me climbing it last June. The previous winter it had a very large section of it fail.

Do you mean Stroud's orchard north of Whitby?
I went past over Christmas either '05 or '06 and could have sworn the tree was GONE!

I call this one "The life history of a tree in 1 photo".
Gleditsia triacanthos:
planted and staked, girdled and died, regrown from suckers, swallowing up the old trunk and stake!

No I meant the tree in the U of G link you posted, which I thought was the same tree that was in the pics you posted, no? The tree in the link is located just outside of Tiverton Ontario. I'll figure out the pic posting later this wknd. Been a very busy night checking out all the olympic stuff going on in the city and my brother is here visiting.

Cheers, Zach

You are in the 4th one - yes?

The dark spot?

That's a pretty weird leader in the middle right...
big canker with a horizontal crack, maybe >70% circumference? Strange bulges/cracks about 4-6 feet higher, and then a really nasty looking crotch at the attachment: looks like alot of missing bark in the union and a vertical crack headed up the stem. Was that all lightning damage?

(I can't believe that one stem with the canker is hanging on!!!)

i didn't see any lighting damage. A weak v-crotch failed, splitting a big leader off the tree.

others will follow in the future if not cabled and braced significantly.

a lot of customers try to tell me lighting must have hit their tree when a v splits and tears down the trunk. just because it looks so nasty i guess.

Here is the leaning Sycamore over Lake Ruth on Western Illinois University's campus. It has been trimmed in the past to reduce the weight on top of it, but really its main support comes from the Green Ash sitting on its base. WIU is looking for ways to support it in the future, especially if/when the ash is gone. We have a few ideas, but I would like to hear some suggestions. This tree is a campus landmark and defines the overall area. Thought it might fit in with this post of interesting trees.

Here is another picture of the Sycamore when the "Lake" was drained and dredged a couple of years ago. That is about 5 feet of muck that got pulled out of there.

I'm sure you've already considered a pedestal in the lake for it to sit on...
Is there any sprouts in the butt that can be bridge grafted into the trunk? Maybe planting younger sycamores around the base and bridge-grafting them in??? I'm just thinking on the fly here.
For heavy leaning specimens at my campus we have considered installing a tall pole, like hydro/telephone to use as an anchor, and running cables/guys to the leaner. Obviously this can look pretty stupid! Only slightly better if you plant around the poles and even train vines up them.
Again, just thinking out loud- we haven't actually gone so far as to install one of these poles.

Yes we have definitely considered installing some sort of structure out in the lake with an adjustable sling that can be changed as the tree grows. There is very solid bed rock under all that muck, so it is possible to install a stable structure out in the lake. As you mentioned one of the issues is trying not to make the area unsightly. People get married here, take graduation photos, etc.

I'm just wondering what had caused all that weird cankering in this photo...

slam a cable in that bad boy from the ash to the sycamore at like a 45

The issue is supporting it if the ash is no longer there. The ash is doing a fine job without a cable at the moment.
